Emergency
Department Pharmacy: A Step Toward the Future
September 27, 2006
Pharmacy
Services have expanded over previous years to encompass many areas
within Medical
Centers; however, the Emergency Department (ED) has never been one of
those to receive quality coverage. Proactive pharmacist involvement in
the ED has proven to be an important value–added service, justified
by clinical interventions, cost savings and increased revenue. At St.
Joseph Medical Center, implementation of ED Pharmacists has benefited
the Pharmacy and ED and illustrates the value of a new paradigm. This
presentation will discuss the specific role of pharmacists in the ED
and how the role relates to optimal medication / disease state management.
