The
Art of Health, Life & Well-being, A Tuscan Exploration of
Healthcare
August
30 to September 6, 2008, Montisi Italy
Imagine rolling
hills dotted with olive trees, vineyards and ancient castle walls and
the warmth and hospitality of the Italian people. This picture of Tuscany
becomes reality in the summer of 2008 as we explore the art of health,
life and well-being.
Nestled in the Tuscan countryside in the tiny mountain town of Montisi, Villa
Maddalena will be our intimate, rustic retreat to learn about healthcare,
life, culture and history. You will find Siena, Florence, Montepulciano and
Montalcino not far down the winding country roads. We will tour the Aboca Pharmacy
Museum in Sansepolcro and visit with local Italian pharmacists. We will connect
with our peers at the University of Perugia Faculty of Pharmacy and pay our
congratulations to the University as it celebrates its 700th Anniversary in
2008!
Don Downing, RPh, clinical
professor at the University of Washington of School of Pharmacy and co-director
of the
Institute for Innovative Pharmacy (I2P2),
will be a key presenting faculty member at this program. Don was an owner
of community pharmacies in Washington State. His practice and training interests
have included the development of the nation's first pharmacist-provided emergency
contraception program and first community pharmacist-administered immunization
services. Don was named the 2008 “Pharmacist Leader
of the Year” by Pharmacy Access Partnership in recognition
of Don's work to promote reproductive
health access in pharmacies. Joining Don is Dr. Karan Dawson, PhD, RPh, director
of continuous professional development at the University of Washington School
of Pharmacy. Karan has over 30 years teaching and pharmacy experience and
her research interests
are in
the
areas
of human
behavior
and
communication,
substance
abuse, smoking cessation, service learning, and geriatric pharmacy practice.
Don and Karan will be joined by faculty from the University of Perugia Faculty
of Pharmacy for a one-half day session to learn about, and to discuss, the
pharmacist's role in health promotion, smoking cessation, reproductive
health programs and pharmacist administered health screenings.
During the stay
in Tuscany, there is time to enjoy the Villa's garden overlooking
the Tuscan countryside, sip a morning cappuccino at the village bar,
enjoy walks in nearby mountain towns and enjoy the flavors and wines
of the region.
Villa Maddalena,
which is located along the old city wall of Montisi, was built in part
in the 15th century and 1700's and was restored in 2004. Today, the Villa
is a nine bedroom and eight and one-half bath house, so this program is
sure to sell out quickly. This program is priced from $2,950* (Excludes
airfare, some meals and some attractions. Restrictions apply, see program
brochure for details).

HIV/AIDS
Clinical Preceptorship Program for Pharmacists
The
Northwest AIDS Education and Training Center (NW AETC) provides clinical
training and guidance to health care professionals and agencies in
Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. NW AETC provides a one-day
preceptorship for pharmacists who work in direct-care settings to learn
about pharmacy care for people living with HIV and AIDS. Participants
take part in patient counseling, as available, in a high-volume HIV
clinic. This setting provides an opportunity for participants to develop
medication schedules and create strategies to maximize adherence and
interaction with patients. HIV pathogenesis, HIV treatment guidelines,
adherence issues, drug resistance, side effect management, and prophylaxis
and treatment of opportunistic infections are some of the topics covered
during the preceptorship. Please visit the NW
AETC web site for more information.
