Program in Drug Interactions The Program in Drug Interactions is a team of School of Pharmacy faculty who are experts in the field of drug interactions, creating perhaps the largest group of experts in the world on drug interactions. This team conducts research to better understand the potential for adverse effects among drug combinations, and is developing computerized databases for use by pharmaceutical companies, pharmacists and physicians. These databases will allow doctors and pharmacists to include potential for interaction as part of their criteria when selecting a drug treatment. In addition to the important research being conducted, the Program has an extensive outreach effort, which includes conferences and continuing education programs for pharmacists, and articles in professional journals and newsletters. Dr. Philip Hansten and Dr. John Horn have authored a book entitled Drug Interactions: Analysis and Management, which is used by health care professionals to manage potential drug interactions in their patients. Program Faculty Dr. Philip Hansten, Dr. Rene Levy, Dr. Kenneth Thummel Dr. William Trager, along with Dr. Michael Eichelbaum from the Eberhard-Karls University in Tubingen, Germany, are the editors of Metabolic Drug Interactions, published in 2000 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book is used by researchers in the fields of drug metabolism and drug interactions, as well as clinical pharmacists and physicians designing drug therapy programs.
