New faculty appointments requiring a search:
Searches are required at the assistant professor level and higher,
for both tenure-eligible and research appointments. They are also
required for the positions of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer if
the appointment is expected to be for more than one year. A faculty
vote is required for all these positions.
Faculty may be appointed to professorial or research professorial
ranks on less than a full-time basis. The percentage of appointment
must be clearly documented at the time of hire. If an assistant
professor appointment is less than 90 percent, the time before
a mandatory tenure decision is extended. See http://www.washington.edu/admin/acadpers/wp/Assistant_Professor.html
The department shall appoint a search committee to solicit nominations
and otherwise identify suitable candidates. Advertisements for
the position must be reviewed/approved by the Assistant Provost
for Equal Opportunity (Equal Opportunity Office) prior to posting.
That committee shall obtain and review data for all candidates
and evaluate their suitability for the appointment. When a qualified
candidate is identified, a recommendation for appointment is sent
to the department chairperson.
The chairperson shall submit all available information concerning
that candidate to the voting members of the department faculty.
If a majority votes in favor of an appointment, a recommendation,
with all relevant information attached, is sent to the dean.
If the chairperson concurs with the department recommendation,
the dean shall make a decision concerning the appointment and,
if it is favorable, shall forward it, the vote of the department
and the recommendation of the chairperson to the Provost.
If the chairperson does not concur in the department recommendation,
his or her objections may be sent to the dean. A different recommendation
from among the candidates who have been considered by the department
may also be sent to the dean by the chairperson. The dean, upon
the advice of the School of Pharmacy promotion and tenure committee,
may then ask the department to reconsider its recommendation given
expressed concerns and/or any new information. The department
may then either reaffirm its original recommendation, or transmit
a new one.
After the department's final recommendation has been sent to
the dean, the dean shall make a decision concerning the appointment
and, if an appointment is to be recommended, send it with the
final recommendation of the department and the recommendation
of the chair to the president.
Faculty appointments with no search
requirement:
A department vote (but no search) is required for adjuncts,
affiliates, visiting faculty, teaching associates, lecturers and
senior lecturers appointed for one year or less, joint appointments
and clinical appointments.
Neither a faculty vote nor a search is required for research
associates, senior fellows and fellows, or visiting scientists.
The recommendation of the chairperson, which may support the
appointment or not, and approval of the dean is required. In the
case of an adjunct or joint appointment, the concurrence from
chairperson of the home department is required, and for an adjunct
appointment, concurrence of the dean of the home department's
school is required.
