Faculty Reappointments

The only members of the faculty who hold continuing appointments with no term limits are Associate Professors, Associate Professors WOT, Professors, and Professors WOT.

The academic titles listed below require reappointment. A department must submit a reappointment recommendation, either positive or negative, for these faculty if:

(1) they hold full-time appointments, regardless of funding
(2) they are appointed into permanently funded state positions
(3) they are research faculty at the Assistant Professor level and above, regardless of funding percentage

Voting members of the department who are senior-in-rank to the person under consideration shall decide whether to recommend renewal or termination of the appointment. Research faculty below the rank of professor shall be considered by voting faculty who are senior in rank.

Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor WOT, and Research Assistant Professor: The initial appointment is for three years. A decision to renew the appointment is normally made in the second year. If renewal is recommended, the appointment is renewed for an additional three years (extended for assistant professors with less than full time appointments, see http://www.washington.edu/admin/acadpers/wp/Assistant_Professor.html). If non-renewal is recommended, the appointment is terminated at the end of the third year. The faculty may also vote to postpone the decision for one year. 3-Year Associate Professor WOT, 3-Year Professor WOT: The appointment is used for a person whose record lacks some of the evidence required for tenure (for example, a distinguished scholar without teaching experience). It is limited to three years and is intended to lead to the granting of tenure. A mandatory tenure review is conducted in the second year of the appointment, with a vote by all eligible Associate Professors and full Professors in the department. If the decision is postponed for one year and denied the next year, the appointment is extended to a fourth and final year. Research Associate Professor, Research Professor: The term of appointment may be from one to five years. Reappointments may be made without limit. The reappointment decision must be made in the last year of appointment, six months (or in the case of an initial annual appointment, three months) before the appointment expiration date. Reappointment is independent of current or future salary availability. Lecturer, Senior Lecturer (appointments of one year or more): The term is one to five years with no limitation to the number of reappointments The reappointment decision must be made in the last year of appointment, six months (or in the case of an initial annual appointment, three months) before the appointment expiration date. Adjunct, affiliate and clinical appointments: These appointments are annual and should be considered for reappointment each year by the faculty of the department. There are no limitations to the number of reappointments that can be made.
All personnel actions for faculty are subject to final approval by the Provost, President and the Board of Regents.
