Elmer M. Plein Endowed Research Fund
Proposal Submission Date: June 1 The Elmer M. Plein Endowment Research Fund has been established to encourage, promote and support research and innovative practice in pharmacy. Areas to be supported may include, but are not limited to: research projects in geriatric pharmacy; drug metabolism and transport, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacoepidemiology; pharmaceutical outcomes, pharmacoeconomics, and drug utilization, demonstration projects evaluating innovative practice models; publishable scholarly reviews, books, or book chapters, travel and meeting-related expenses for presentation of research or results of demonstration projects. University of Washington School of Pharmacy faculty, clinical and affiliate faculty, current or former students, research and postdoctoral fellows, and current research assistants/associates of the University of Washington School of Pharmacy are eligible to submit proposals. One to three awards per year in the range of $500 to $5,000 each will be considered. It is anticipated that no single award will exceed $5,000. The award funding is from the Elmer M. Plein Endowed Research Fund in Pharmacy. 1. The proposal should be between three and five typwritten, single-spaced pages; the first page should begin with a title and the names of all investigators. 2. The proposal must include: 3. If the proposed research involves the use of human subjects (either direclty or through patient records or other data such as specimens or autopsy materials), IRB approval is required by federal, state and university regulations. Final funding is contingent upon verification of IRB approval. If needed, our office can provide administrative support in preparing an IRB application. The review committee may request additional information on the proposed project as needed. 4. Students are required to include a letter of support from his or her faculty mentor(s). 5. Research assistants/associates are required to have a faculty supervisor and letter of support from him or her for the proposed research. The research that is proposed should be in line with the mission and program of the lab in which he or she works. 6. Resume/CV for EACH proposer listed is required. 1. Progress Reports: A one-page progress report is required for all currently funded projects and is due by June 15 of each year following initial funding, unless the project is completed. 2. Final Report of Outcomes: A report of the outcomes achieved by the project will be required within three months of the conclusion of the project. The report should address the results obtained in seeking the project objectives, potential impact of the project findings on pharmacy practice or education, and how the funds were spent. The report should also include plans or accomplished dissemination of results through publication or presentation. A committee composed of School-based and clinical/affiliate faculty will review proposals and recommend funding to the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy. Final selection will be made by the Chair. Criteria considered in selecting the proposals to be funded are:
1. Schedule: One to three proposals will be funded annually. Proposals
must be submitted by June 1 for consideration. Awards will be made by
August 1 and funding will be available on September 1, unless otherwise
stipulated in the award. Projects are expected to be completed in one

While this proposal provides a good sample for form and structure, using it as a sole guide does not guarantee that a proposal will be awarded funding.
