Fellowship in Immunology Therapeutics/Solid Organ Transplantation

This post-doctoral fellowship is designed to train the individual to establish an independent and collaborative progressive research practice in Immunology Therapeutics and Solid Organ Transplantation. Research activities include: protocol design, study coordination, data collection, HPLC analysis, microsomal incubations, data analysis, presentation of results and manuscript preparation. Polymerase chain reaction analysis and cell culture technique may also be involved. Opportunities for additional coursework and teaching experience is also available.

Elmer M. and Joy B. Plein Fellowship for Excellence in Pharmacy Education

The University of Washington School of Pharmacy is pleased to announce the availability of the Elmer M. and Joy B. Plein Fellowship for Excellence in Pharmacy Education. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide fellows with the opportunity to acquire research and teaching skills needed to become outstanding faculty.

The scope of the fellowship may address research and teaching efforts of the Department of Pharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry and/or Pharmaceutics depending on the interests of the successful candidate. Wide ranging research opportunities are available in the following area: pharmacotheraputics, drug metabolism, drug interactions, pharmacogenetics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacoeconomics and pharmacoepidemiology.

Candidate qualifications include a PharmD with a residency or prior fellowship training or a PhD Applicants need to demonstrate career goals consistent with a commitment to becoming faculty in a School of Pharmacy. The duration of the fellowship is one year with possibility of renewal for a second year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The applicant pool will be evaluated by a committee composed of faculty from the Departments of Pharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutics.

Community/Ambulatory Pharmacy Residency Program

A community-based pharmacy residency is designed to be a comprehensive postgraduate experience that advances a pharmacist's education and training in drug therapy and disease management for patients in the community/ambulatory setting. The residency prepares pharmacists for the current and future realities of patient care in a rapidly changing health care environment. It provides opportunities for integrating the pharmaceutical care practice model and practice-based outcomes research in community/ambulatory settings. Key components of the residency experience are the advancement of the pharmacy profession and the discovery of new knowledge that leads to improved patient care.

The community/ambulatory pharmacy residency experience will focus on the following competency areas:

    1. Professionalism
    2. Practice Management
    3. Communication
    4. Data Collection and Management
    5. Clinical Problem Solving, and
    6. Practice-Based Research.

It is expected that each practice site will offer additional experiences and opportunities to take advantage of the unique programs and services available. Additionally, each site offers flexibility in designing different rotations and educational experiences depending on the residents' specific interests. Residents will have opportunities to work with other residents in Washington state as well as attend local, regional and national meetings.

There are currently three sites in the CPRP program which are described more fully in the Site Description section.

Residency Program Goals

  • To advance the Resident Pharmacist’s education and training in drug therapy, disease state management, communication skills and to develop and implement innovative patient care programs in Bartell Drug Locations.

About Residency Program

    • Residency is a 12-month full time obligation.
    • Residency will be tailored to match the background and career objectives of the resident, the goals of the Bartell Drug Pharmacy Department and the goals of the University Of Washington School Of Pharmacy.
    • Residency will be based at the Bartell Drugs Corporate Office in Seattle, WA and require occasional travel to Bartell Drugs sites in the Puget Sound area.
    • Resident will be provided a work area and computer in the Pharmacy Department at the Corporate Office.
    • While on-site at Bartell Drugs locations the resident will have access to a private counseling room (where available) for patient MTM reviews, immunization administration, and other vital sign monitoring as applicable.
    • Many Bartell Drugs locations are currently offering emergency contraception, immunizations, bone density scanning, lipid monitoring and travel clinic programs.  Resident will help expand these services in additional Bartell Drugs locations.
    • Resident Pharmacist will train Bartell Drugs pharmacists, interns, and 4th year externs about innovate patient care programs.
    • Resident Pharmacist will work with the University Of Washington School Of Pharmacy.
    • Resident Pharmacist will be given opportunity to gain experience and develop skills in marketing and obtaining reimbursement for innovative strategies.
    • Resident Pharmacist will work a maximum of one day per week covering pharmacist shifts unrelated to the residency.
    • Resident will assist in further development of the residency program for future Resident Pharmacists.

     


    Postdoctoral Fellowships in Pharmacokinetics

    PharmD or equivalent (residency preferred) to enter 1-2 year research fellowship starting August 1, designed to train independent investigator. Experiences include analytical methodology, noninvasive pharmacodynamic measurement techniques, protocol development and implementation, biostatistics, data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation. Opportunities for additional coursework and teaching pharmacy students. Facilities: Clinical Research Center, Cardiovascular Research Laboratories, clinical Pharmacokinetics Lab, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy Lab and extensive computer equipment. Yearly stipend, medical/dental coverage offered. Seattle has temperate climate and many recreational activities including backpacking, hiking, water sports, snow skiing, major professional sports teams and theater.
