Practicum Course Information

Note: Some Frequently Asked Questions about these new experiences (updated June 17, 2008).

The Office of Professional Pharmacy Education offers several different experiential learning courses. Select from the following:

  • PHARM 526 Introductory Pharmacy Practicum (formerly PHARM 305, elective course for first-year students, NO LONGER OFFERED)

  • PHARM 527 Introductory Community Pharmacy Experience (formerly PHARM 335, required course for first/second-year students of all classes)

  • PHARM 528 Introductory Institutional Pharmacy Experience (formerly PHARM 336, required course for second/third-year students in the class of 2011 and beyond)

  • PHARM 529 Experiential Learning (formerly PHARM 478, elective course for advanced practice projects)

  • PHARM 574 Introductory Clinical Practicum (required course for third-year students)

  • PHARM 575/576/577/578 Advanced Practicums (required courses for fourth-year students)

  • PHARM 577 Advanced Practicum (required course for External PharmD students)


PHARM 527: Introductory Community Pharmacy Experience

Course Description. This 4-credit required course is designed to ensure competency of all pharmacy students in basic skills needed to work in an ambulatory pharmacy environment.

PHARM 528: Introductory Institutional Pharmacy Experience

Course Description. This 3-credit required course is designed to ensure competency of all pharmacy students in basic skills needed to work in an inpatient pharmacy environment.

To enroll, you will need an entry code. In order to obtain this, you will need to submit to the Office of Professional Education a cover sheet and your signed competencies. This should be delivered to the Office of Professional Education.

PHARM 529: Experiential Learning

Course Description. This variable-credit required course is designed to identify new learning above and beyond the PHARM 527 and 528 competencies. Under faculty supervision, pharmacy students gain experience working on advanced practice projects, in a pharmacy practice setting, prior to the final year of the pharmacy program.


PHARM 574: Introductory Clinical Practicum

Course Description. This one-credit required course is designed to introduce the student to the process of advanced patient care in a real care environment. Students will visit a patient at an assigned care site. Other activities include orientation for fourth-professional year advanced practice experiences, case and short seminar presentation, and first aid and CPR certification.

Third-year students will enroll for this class in spring quarter of their third professional year.

The Course Syllabus. There are two versions. Please select the appropriate one.

Evaluation. Each student will need to submit a completed presentation evaluation form which has been signed by the preceptor and a SOAP note to the Experiential Education Director.


PHARM 575, 576, 577, and 578: Advanced Practicums

Course Description. Each of these courses are five credits, except for PHARM 578, which is variable-credit.

To enroll, students at this time will be enrolled in the appropriate quarter by the Professional Education Coordinator. Please consult the Coordinator if you have any questions. PHARM 575 is the course number of the Institutional Clinical Practicum, PHARM 576 is the course number of the Ambulatory Care Clinical Practicum, PHARM 577 is the course number for the Advance (non-patient care) Practicum, and PHARM 578 the course number for the Advanced Elective Practicum.
