Instructions for Speakers
This course is given in a journal club format with weekly presentations by faculty,
students, and postdoctoral fellows in the department. Topics will cover
a broad range of interests represented in the department as well as other
areas related to pharmacology that are of current research interest.
Guidelines for speakers
- Choose topics which are not directly related to your research.
- Introduce the topic with sufficient background material for those of us not working in the field.
- Describe experimental results and conclusions using several papers as a focus. Some real data should be included when possible and not just summaries.
- Be prepared to defend the work you present (i.e., choose papers that you think represent high quality research or at least those which are so important that the conclusions need to be discussed or challenged).
A list of speakers will be set up arbitrarily from those that are participating in the course. First year graduate students will not give a talk during the first year but are expected to attend and contribute to the discussion. If you can not present your talk on the assigned day, arrange a switch with someone else on the list and let Stan McKnight know. By Monday (noon) on the week that you give your presentation you must give Noal Nyland (K540) a title for your talk and a list of references. Your references must include a list of all authors and the titles of the papers as well as the journal information. Please send the information to Noal Nyland. The office will see that the announcement is distributed to everyone participating and the complete notice will also appear on our Departmental Web site. If anyone has a problem deciding on a topic, please contact Stan McKnight. The Web site has lists of topics and reference from the past several years and you should consult that to be sure that your chosen papers have not already been discussed.
