It usually requires about five years to complete a Ph.D. degree. During this time, the student is expected to devote the full twelve-month year to his or her graduate work (allowing time for vacation and holidays) and is not permitted to take outside employment if he or she is supported by funds administered by the department. All graduate students will be asked to assist in the teaching program of the department as a practical means of gaining experience in the presentation of lectures and laboratory work. All graduate students are expected to attend and participate in departmental seminars.
