About Public Health Genetics

The sequencing of the human genome, completed in 2003, has raised the promise of revolutionary advances in medicine, public health, pharmacology, nursing, and other fields of application. At the same time, the discoveries bring attention to the urgent need for educating professionals, especially educators and public health practitioners, in the implications of these new discoveries.

To meet this need, an effective graduate-level program integrates numerous disciplines and approaches. Students are trained in how to confront the interrelated medical, public health, economic, social, and ethical questions of the future. A growing consensus is emerging around a number of core competencies that public health professionals need to have if they are to function successfully as the application of genomic knowledge accelerates.

At the University of Washington, the IPHG programs are designed with these goals in mind. For more information, please refer to the IPHG Program Brochure. For highlights and details of the Institute's recent activities and achievements, please read the IPHG Annual Progress Report.
