Student Profile

Joon-Ho Yu came to the IPHG to explore fundamental questions of race in genetic research and how these issues impact communities and health prevention. Questions of interest to Joon include: should we be using race or ethnicity as a variable in genetic epidemiologic studies; and if so, what are the best methods to use it and how do we insure it is used appropriately?

More broadly, Joon's interest in the implications of research in genetics for minority communities builds on his professional experience in minority health advocacy and policy. He feels the multidisciplinary curriculum at IPHG allows him to approach the problem from many different angles. Joon's Ph.D. dissertation will examine the issue of race and genetics from the perspectives of genetic epidemiology, ethics, and medical anthropology.
