The goal of the PIECCPP is to improve rural health services that
benefit Head Start, Early Childhood Education, and Universal
Kindergarten enrollees and their siblings in six US-Associated Pacific
Island states:
- The Federated States of Micronesia [Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae],
- The Republic of Palau,
- The Republic of Marshall Islands, and
- Guam.
Specifically, we are implementing a program to prevent Early Childhood Caries (Tooth Decay) in young children by:
- Involving parents and families in preventive Oral Health Care through educational and practical home visits,
- Distributing fluoride toothpaste and toothbrushes to younger siblings as well as current enrollees,
- Providing fluoride varnish treatments tied to immunizations to younger siblings and current enrollees, and
- Introducing snack foods that contain a natural, cavity-fighting sweetner called Xylitol.
The PIECCP Project is funded by a grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Head Start Bureau.
