Seattle:
PKU clinic is held on the third Wednesday and the following Thursday of each month at the University of Washington. Children and their parents are seen in groups based on the child's age
.

Wednesday, 1:00 pm 5-12 years (grades K-6)
Thursday, 9:00 am 2-5 years (toddlers and preschool)
Thursday, 1:00 PM 12-18 years (Jr. and Sr. high school)

Individual appointments with the PKU team are also available.

Clinic activities are centered around a yearly theme. The focus for 2004-2005 is "Building Self-Esteem." Our goal is to create age-appropriate activities that help clinic participants to build and maintain self-esteem, and to see how self-esteem contributes to successful PKU management.

Paula the Picky Pig
The Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning groups will read a story about Paula Pig, who will not try anything new. After awhile, she discovers that she enjoys trying new things and has more fun too!

How to Keep a Food Record
Wednesday and Thursday afternoon includes an activity discussing the components of an accurate food record and why food records are important for managing PKU.

PKU Cooking Demo: Low Protein Pasta and Rice
The Wednesday morning group will have the opportunity to sample a few low protein foods to become familiar with available products.

Halloween Fun
Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning activites teach skills for making healthy choices during Halloween.

Slumber Party
The Thursday afternoon activity centers around strategies for managing PKU at a sleep-over.

PKU Cooking Demo: Quick Breads
Wednesday morning participants will have the opportunity to sample low protein tortillas, low protein waffles, and low protein applesauce muffins.

Be Assertive
Wednesday and Thursday afternoon's activity will focus on assertiveness. We will complete a worksheet and an activity using our skills of assertion in an appropriate way, especially for making healthy choices for PKU.

The Count's Cornucopia
We'll talk about Thanksgiving "YES" and "NO" foods at the Thursday morning clinic.

Adolescent Transition Clinic
For those adolescents who are involved in the transition curriculum, Thursday afternoon we will be working through visit 4.

Family Meals
The Wednesday morning and parent groups will focus on how to find the time to eat together as a family, and the benefits of doing so.

Holiday Food Choices
Wednesday and Thursday afternoon's activity focuses on skills useful for making healthy holiday food choices.

Theodore Mouse
Thursday morning we will read a story about a mouse named Theodore who is allergic to green foods. He learns to find "yes" foods at a dinner he thinks is full of "no" foods.

Cookie Exchange
Wednesday and Thursday clinics include a cookie exchange. Bring your favorite holiday cookies to share, and take home a variety of low-phe holiday treats. We'll talk about ways to monitor the amount of phe eaten during these types of holiday activities.

PKU Cooking Demo: Yeast Breads
The Wednesday morning clinic will sample low protein yeast breads including low protein bread, bread sticks, and artisan bread.

Bleep
Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning's activity involves teaching "earthling rules" (including how to manage PKU) to an alien named Bleep.

Hardy Personality/"Laws" of Setting Goals
Thursday afternoon's activity focuses on positive personality traits to promote health and steps for setting goals for the new year.

Monitoring Blood Phe Levels at Home
The Wednesday morning group and the parent groups will include a discussion of tips for dealing with blood draws at different ages.

I Like Me
The Thursday morning group will read and talk about the book I Like Me by Nancy Carlson. It's a story about a pig who feels good about herself, likes to try new things, and takes care of herself.

Guthrie Training
Parent-child teams learn to take a blood sample using a Guthrie card. We'll talk about the steps in collecting a sample and some useful tips.

Adolescent Transition Clinic
For those adolescents who are involved in the transition curriculum, Thursday afternoon we will be working through visit 5.

Get a Taste for Nutrition!
March is National Nutrition Month! The Wednesday morning discussion and the parent groups will focus on healthy eating tips for 2005.

Alexander the Elephant Who Couldn't Eat Peanuts
In the Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning groups we will watch a video about an elephant who is allergic to peanuts and discuss how PKU is similar to a food allergy.

How to Beat the "I Forgots"
Thursday afternoon's activity includes a discussion of strategies to help us remember to do important things (like manage our PKU!).

Adolescent Transition Curriculum
We will begin our second adolescent transition group this month. We will be working through visit 1.

PKU Self-Management Timeline
The Wednesday morning and parent groups will include a discussion of the PKU Self-Management Timeline developed by the UW PKU Clinic. It is a guideline of suggested tasks for children to adopt as they progress from infancy to adulthood.

Why Am I Different?
Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning participants will read the book Why Am I Different? by Norma Simon. Wednesday afternoon we will play People Bingo and Thursday morning we will make Paper Dolls and discuss what makes people different.

Independence IQ
Thursday afternoon we will discuss the PKU Self-Management Timeline, talk about independence, and see where we are at in managing PKU independently.

Adolescent Transition Clinic
For those adolescents who are in the first group completing the transition curriculum, Thursday afternoon we will be working through visits 6 and 7.

Building on Family Strengths
A representative from the Building on Family Strengths Program will attend the Wednesday and Thursday morning parent groups.

Don't Feed the Monster on Tuesdays
Wednesday afternoon participants will read Don't Feed the Monster on Tuesdays by Adolph Moser. We will learn how to build self-esteem in general, and in relation to PKU.

All By Myself
Thursday morning we will read All By Myself by Mercer Mayer. We will discuss how doing things by ourselves makes us feel good, but it is also fun to do things with other people!

Magical Soup Evaluation Tour
Part of the Wednesday and Thursday afternoon groups will work through an activity looking at soup choices that fit into the PKU diet.

Adolescent Transition Clinic
For those adolescents who have just started the transition curriculum, Thursday afternoon we will be working through visit 2.

Look-alike Foods
The Wednesday morning group and the parent groups will include a discussion of things to consider when deciding whether or not "imitation" low protein foods are right for your child with PKU.

Dinosaur's Journey to High Self-Esteem
Wednesday afternoon participants will play a game that addresses issues children often face, many relating directly to PKU.

Oliver's Fruit Salad
The Thursday morning group will read Oliver's Fruit Salad by Vivian French. This is a story about a boy who learns about fruits from his grandpa's garden. He learns to try new fruits, discovers that he likes them, and best of all...they are YES foods! We'll make our own fruit salad.

Soup is Good Food
Part of the Wednesday and Thursday afternoon groups will take a look at different types of soups and determine which kinds fit into their food pattern.

Adolescent Transition Clinic
This will be the final visit #8 for those adolescent's who are finishing up the transition curriculum.

The Wednesday and Thursday afternoon groups are going bowling! The Thursday afternoon group will come to clinic on Wednesday afternoon this month.

For families who live too far away to attend monthly clinics, a monthly serum phe level and a 3 day food record is required. Experience has shown that this monthly feedback is essential to maintain good serum phe levels.
