  1. Agricultural Burning Smoke Exposure and Health Effect Study in Pullman

The Northwest PM Center proposes three research projects:

  1. Epidemiology Study of Particulate Matter (PM) and Cardiopulmonary Mortality
To examine the contribution of PM exposures in the occurrence of cardiopulmonary diseases using time series data on cause-specific mortality from Seattle and Anchorage, Alaska, and a case-crossover study of roughly 1100 sudden cardiac arrest cases in Seattle.
  2. Comprehensive Exposure and Health Effect Assessment in Susceptible Subpopulations
To measure physical and chemical properties of PM, levels in the indoor and outdoor environments, and personal exposures, and to relate these exposures to symptoms, pulmonary function, and physiological markers in individuals.
  3. Mechanisms of Toxicity of Particulate Matter (PM) Using Transgenic Mouse Strains
To develop, validate, and study an animal model of PM toxicity, aiming to elucidate biochemical markers of cardiopulmonary response.
