MLA Midyear Report 2001-2002
The Pacific Northwest Chapter has approximately 165 members and has the largest geographic area of any chapter, including the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. Electronic communication is crucial to our chapter and expanding and improving our Web site is an ongoing priority. The following activities support MLA's Strategic Plan and Priorities as well as our Chapter MAP.
Goal: Professional Development
- Professional Development Committee sponsored 5 CE courses at the 2001 annual conference:
- Introduction to QuickDoc for Windows
- Words that Change Minds
- Face to Face: Strategies for Effective Consumer Health Communication
- Digital Library Issues and Techniques
- OVID for the Clinical Patron
- 2001 HAL Un-Plugged: a PNC/MLA Odyssey, PNC's annual meeting was held in Gleneden Beach, Oregon, September 9-13, 2001
- Conducted 19th annual PNC/MLA Survey and posted results on website
- Co-sponsored Seattle viewing and recording of MLA teleconference "Sync or Swim: Managing the Flood of PDAs in Health Care.
Goal: Advocacy
- Published two electronic issues of Northwest Notes, the PNC newsletter
Goal: Organization
- The following member were elected to office for 2002: Peggy Baldwin, Chair-Elect; Cheryl Goodwin, Secretary; Edean Berglund, MLA Nominating Committee Nominee
- The 2001 Annual Meeting Program Planning Committee reported covering all costs with revenues generated by meeting
- Conference Planning Committee conducted Meeting Survey of membership to help guide conference planning
- Updated the Responsibility Manual for Chapter officers
- Approved meeting jointly with California Chapters in Sacramento in 2004
Goal: Research
- Robin Braun was re-appointed Benchmarking Chapter Educator and facilitated a round table lunch at the annual meeting
Goal: National Information Policy
- Our government relations representative monitored library legislative and other electronic discussion groups and forwarded relevant items to PNC members
Goal: Information Technology
- Technology Committee charged with task of looking at and addressing barriers to electronic document delivery in the Northwest.
- PNC's chapter web page is increasingly helpful to members, used for the following:
- Northwest Notes, the chapter's quarterly newsletter is accessed via our web site; members are alerted to new issues on HLIB-NW, a regional email list
- The chapter's history is available on our Web site. The history includes listings of past officers and committee chairs
- Conference Planning Committee's planning manuals
- Distribution of dues, registration, CE surveys
- Membership directories of members and libraries
- Chapter bylaws, minutes, upcoming events
