Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is dedicated to advancing the educational and career goals of today’s students. Its mission is to “awaken, nurture and empower learners to ethical lives of service and leadership.” Founded in 1912, Saint Mary’s is a private, Catholic, comprehensive institution, guided by the De La Salle Christian Brothers since 1933. A U.S. News and World Report “top-tier” university, Saint Mary’s is also listed in the “Colleges of Distinction” national guidebook for excelling in key areas of educational quality. Saint Mary’s goal is to be recognized as one of the nation’s top teaching and learning institutions.Saint Mary’s offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs at locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin and overseas in Nairobi, Kenya. The university enrolls 5,600 students as of fall, 2006. 1,300 are traditional undergraduates in the College at the Winona campus, and 4,300 are non-traditional undergraduates and adult learners in the School of Graduate and Professional Programs.At the coed, residential Winona campus, the undergraduate College combines traditional liberal arts and sciences with career preparation, in an environment where students come first. Academic programs include 58 majors and many minors, with a student-faculty ratio of 12:1. The scenic, vibrant Winona campus is located in the majestic bluffs of the Mississippi River valley. It comprises 400 acres and 47 buildings, with excellent facilities for living, learning and recreation. Students enjoy a full spectrum of clubs and organizations, and 21 NCAA Div. A pioneer in outreach education since 1984, the school offers certificate, bachelor degree completion, master degree, specialist, and doctoral programs at the university’s Twin Cities and Winona campuses and Rochester center, with courses offered at sites in Apple Valley, greater Minnesota and Wisconsin.
At the Nairobi campus, Christ the Teacher Institute for Education offers undergraduate-level education programs, and the Maryknoll Institute of African Studies offers graduate-level programs in African studies.
Saint Mary’s is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, www.ncacihe.org, and is approved for veterans training under relevant public laws.
GeoSpatial Services
GeoSpatial Services ( GSS ) is the University project center within the School of Graduate and Professional Programs. GSS maintains a wide variety of projects with a diverse group of project partners. Currently, GSS is one of BP Pipeline’s of North America’s preferred providers for GIS and spatial web applications. We are a major wetland mapping operation throughout the U.S., including the Yukon Delta and Togiak NWR, the National Petroleum Reserve – Alaska, the State of Iowa, and many others in Wisconsin, Michigan, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Florida. GSS offers professional experience to a diverse group of SMU graduate and undergraduate students, making it a valuable University educational asset.
