From the Director

Welcome! You are at this page because you are considering a career in the environmental field. The need and demand for well-trained professionals who can address challenging environmental issues has never been stronger. The Program on the Environment (PoE) has a rich history of producing such leaders, and is the hub of interdisciplinary environmental studies at the University of Washington. PoE is the place for engaged and committed students that share your concerns and passion for our environment, and want to make a difference.

PoE is known for its excellent teaching faculty, committed staff, and passionate students, as well as its location in the heart of a “natural laboratory” in the Pacific Northwest.  Situated between the Cascade Mountains to the east, the shores of Puget Sound to the west, Vancouver, British Columbia, to the north, and Portland, Oregon to the south, the area provides a unique setting in which to study the environment. Students interested in everything from food systems to urban development, ecosystem restoration to sustainability, can be out in the field within minutes from campus. PoE provides an opportunity to design a course of study that meets your needs and interests.  The following web pages should answer many of your questions, but give us a call, or better yet, pay us a visit!

We look forward to meeting you.
