Certificate Requirements

Eligibility

All students enrolled in graduate and professional degree programs in any school of the University of Washington are eligible to apply for the Graduate Certificate in Environment Management.

The Program on the Environment does not offer graduate degree programs at this time and does not offer admission to graduate students. Prospective graduate students interested in applying for graduate study in Environmental Management at UW should see our page of Graduate Study Information.

Students interested in continuing education but who do not want to pursue a Master's or Doctorate may want to explore courses and certificates offered through UW Educational Outreach.

Admission Requirements

Prior to admission, students must have completed a one quarter upper-level or graduate-level course in each of the following:

  1. applied quantitative methods (e.g., microeconomics, numerical modeling, applied statistical methods) or pure quantitative methods (e.g., mathematics or statistics); and
  2. social or natural science.

Facility with written argument and communication is a prerequisite. This requirement is demonstrated in the letter of application.

Summary of Certificate Requirements

Requirements for The Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management consist of 21 credits of coursework and projects. These requirements include:

  • 3 core courses (10 total credits);
  • completion of a team-based Keystone project (8 credits);
  • Students must complete at least one core course prior to enrollment in keystone course; and
  • 3 credits of electives selected in consultation with the Graduate Program Coordinator and approved by the EM Admissions Committee.

Further details on these requirements can be found by clicking the hyperlinks above or the sub-menu above.

Completion Requirements

Upon completion of the requirements, students should submit an EM Certificate Completion Form to the Graduate Program Coordinator.

Note:  Award of the Certificate is contingent on completion of the student's graduate degree.

Note: Students who entered the program and completed some or all certificate requirements prior to the 2005-2006 academic year should contact the graduate program coordinator to develop a plan to complete the Certificate.

Electives

In addition to the core courses, students are required to take 3 credits of electives outside the student's home graduate department and major field. Courses cross-listed in the home department may be approved on a case-by-case basis. Electives are selected in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator or an EM faculty advisor to ensure that the elective credits broaden the student's environmental education consistent with his or her academic and career goals.

Courses used to fulfill the electives requirement should generally be at least 3 credits at the 400 level or above. Electives should be approved by the Graduate Program Coordinator and EM Admissions Committee before the courses are completed in order to fulfill the electives requirement. Proposed electives should be submitted in writing [Elective Approval Form] to the Graduate Program Coordinator (envirmgt@u.washington.edu) together with a brief statement of how the proposed electives relate to the Environmental Management program, and how they contribute to overall academic and professional goals.

The Graduate Coordinator maintains a list of suggested electives to help students plan their course of study.

Grading/Assessment/Minimum Standards

The program complies with Graduate School standards for performance and completion. Student performance will be assessed in accord with standards in primary academic units. To successfully complete the certificate, the student must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all courses taken to fulfill the requirements, and no grade in any of these courses can be lower than 2.7.
