The Henry Luce Speaker Series features leading
authorities in environmental sustainability, and experts in topics addressed
in the current Keystone projects and other related environmental policy, business or science issues.
These distinguished experts present public lectures and meet with Keystone
project teams in workshop sessions to provide expertise and input on the
Keystone project topics.

April 22 , 2008 - Jim Puckett: "Toxic Trade: The case of Electronic Waste and the Basel Convention "
Tuesday, 6:30 pm, Kane 110
Mr. Puckett will explore the issue of toxic trade through the lens of electronic waste trade and he will provide the context, history, evolution and relevance of the Basel Convention -- one of the world's landmark multilateral environmental agreements. The Basel Convention is not an esoteric United Nations treaty, but is relevant to anyone who owns a computer or cell phone. Mr. Puckett will explore the effects of globalization and free trade on electronic waste. The life cycle of electronic products, which is unseen by consumers, is unsustainable, economically inefficient and impacts some of the most vulnerable peoples on earth. Mr. Puckett will discuss the role of individuals in preventing the Digital Dump.

January 15, 2008 - Ann Thorpe: "The Central Debates of Sustainable Design "

Ann Thorpe is the author of The Designer’s Atlas of Sustainability (Island Press, 2007). She teaches and researches sustainable design in the fields of product design and architecture at several universities in and around London, England. Prior to England, she worked in the U.S. Pacific Northwest with professional industrial designers and architects on sustainable design issues. She has lectured widely on sustainable design.
