Admission Requirements

A professional degree in pharmacy, medicine, or a health-related discipline is encouraged. Students with baccalaureate or master's degrees in related fields such as epidemiology, economics, or public health are also encouraged to apply.

Other Requirements

  • Admission to the Graduate School of the University of Washington.
  • Official transcripts showing a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  • A statement of personal background and goals.
  • A curriculum vitae or resume.
  • Three letters of reference.
  • Graduate Record Examination Scores
  • When requested, completion of a personal interview with the Graduate Admissions Committee.
  • For students for whom English is not their native language, results demonstrating proficiency in the English language on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

An applicant with exceptionally strong qualifications, such as a strong record of related work experience, who does not meet all of the above requirements may be considered for admission. Plans to remedy academic deficiencies may be suggested either prior to or during the first year of the program.

Application Information

Due to the scheduling of core courses, students are accepted for Autumn quarter only. Autumn quarter typically begins the last week of September.

The application deadline is January 15.

  • Applicants must apply both to the UW Graduate School and the Department of Pharmacy.
  • Applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection by March.

Paper Application Procedures

When applying to the University of Washington using the paper process, you will need to send two separate packets of materials, one to the Graduate School, and one to the Department of Pharmacy.

Please read all instructions on the forms carefully before completing them.

First Packet:

  • Copy of the Application for Admission to the Graduate School
  • A check or money order for $50.00 payable to the University of Washington
  • One copy of official transcripts from each college you have attended outside of the United States
  • Official GRE Scores
  • For international students for whom English is not their native language, TOEFL, and TSE scores.

  • Signed copy of the Application for Admission to the Graduate School
  • One copy of official transcripts, in a sealed envelope, from each college you have attended
  • Supplemental Application for the Department of Pharmacy. (This is now contained in the on-line application through the Graduate School. We prefer that you use the on-line application, but a link to the form is provided here, if you are unable to access the Graduate School site.) The Supplemental Application includes space for your Personal Statement describing your background, academic interests, and career objectives
  • A resume or curriculum vitae listing educational and employment history (Please provide this via the Graduate School on-line application process.)
  • Recommendation referrals are now requested during the Graduate School on-line application process. Your recommenders will receive an email requesting the letter and form be completed and uploaded through the Graduate School site. They will be available to the department after this process is completed. The recommendations must be from three persons who are in a position to evaluate your potential for graduate school. At least one recommendation must be from a person at the last school you attended for full-time study, unless you have been out of school for five years or longer.
  • If you are unable to provide email addresses then your referees should return their recommendations directly to the Department of Pharmacy in sealed envelopes with their signatures over the seals.
  • Application checklist listing names and addresses of references.

Financial Aid

The Department of Pharmacy supports its graduate students with teaching and research assistantships or fellowships on a competitive basis. The Eli Lilly Endowed Fellowship also provides financial support for selected students.

The University's Office of Student Financial Aid administers federal, state and institutional financial aid programs, including loans and work opportunities. Work-study positions are available throughout the campus.
