MEDIC 3/4

Hello Everyone, On Monday, March 4th in Health Sciences T wing room 359 from 5 to 6:30, MEDIC will hold its next meeting. Vishu and Claire will be leading a discussion about patient privacy in the era of online medical records and electronic health screening. What, if any, precautions need to be taken in order to assure patients that their information is secure. If you use a medical screening kiosk at your local WalMart, should you expect your information to be kept as secure as information obtained by your primary care physician? Should WalMart be able to use that information for purposes other than suggesting care for you? Are there safe ways to use online medical records as a pool of data for large-scale medical research? If you want to read more about these issues before our discussion, the following links provide more information: https://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs8-med.htm http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2013/February/19/self-health-care-kiosks-walmart.aspx http://www.bmj.com/content/309/6966/1422 (Abstract ungated, full article available with UW netid) We will also be discussing meeting dates and times for next quarter. If you are unable to make our meeting this week, send us an email with meeting dates and times that would work for you. Navigating the Health Sciences building can be tricky. Enter through the main T wing entrance, enter on the third floor, turn right, turn left at the first hallway on your left, and when that hallway tees, room 359 is just to your right. Bring your friends! Snacks will be provided! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at medicuw@uw.edu and be sure to like us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/medicuw for updates about MEDIC and bioethics in the media. Hope to see you Monday, Zach Simon, Ceri Weber, Michelle Drews, Vishu Anekonda and Claire Simon — MEDIC at UW University of Washington Student Organization Affiliated with Bioethics and Humanities http://students.washington.edu/medicuw/ medicuw@u.washington.edu
