Save-the-Date: Important Events in November * PERLA/Global WACh Symposium: “Global Health for Women, Children and Adolescents: Making a Difference Across the Lifespan” Thursday, November 7, 2013 – 3:00 – 4:30 pm. HUB, North Ballroom. Global Center for Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents and Children (Global WACh) and Program for Education and Research in Latin America (PERLA) present a symposium featuring posters and speakers covering women, child, and adolescent health research, as well as service and training projects and programs. The symposium will be followed by a WGHA Discovery Series lecture. * Washington Global Health Alliance Discovery Series: “Maternal Health: Achievements So Far and Challenges Ahead” Thursday, November 7, 2013 – 5:00 – 7:00 pm. HUB, North Ballroom. In conjunction with the PERLA/Global WACh Symposium, the WGHA series presents: Ana Langer, MD, Professor of the Practice of Public Health; Director, Women and Health Initiative; Director, Maternal Health Task Force Department of Global Health and Population, Harvard School of Public Health. Networking reception to follow at 6:00 p.m. * Party for the Health of It, (a Washington Global Health Alliance event). Saturday, November 9, 2013 – 9:00 – midnight. Seattle Aquarium. Proceeds benefit the WGHA’s collaboration for clean water and proper sanitation in Tanzania. Tickets for the party are $45. Tickets for the benefit dinner honoring King Holmes, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Global Health, for the Inaugural Award of Impact, are $250. * Special Guest Lecture: Deo Niyizonkiza on “Opportunities to Heal and Change a Nation Forgotten” Thursday, November 14, 2013 – 3:30 – 5:00 pm. Ethnic Cultural Theatre. “Strength in What Remains,” a New York Times bestseller by Tracy Kidder, is a book about Deo Niyizonkiza that highlights his life and escape from the Burundi civil war. News * Widespread Media Coverage on PLOS Paper Giving New Estimates of Iraq War Deaths Between 2003 and 2011. Researchers with UW’s Department of Global Health, UW’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Johns Hopkins University, Simon Fraser University and Mustansiriya University conducted the first population-based survey since 2006 to estimate war-related deaths in Iraq and the first to cover the full-time span of the conflict. Amy Hagopian, PhD, Associate Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington, was the lead author of this study. All told, the researchers estimate nearly a half million people died from causes that could be attributed to the war. Their results were published October 15 in the open access journal PLOS Medicine. * Jared Baeten, MD, PhD Awarded 2013 ASPPH/Pfizer Young Investigator’s Research Award. * Washington Global Health Alliance awards King Holmes, MD, PhD, with its inaugural Impact Award. * In honor of International Day of the Girl October 11, we highlighted a project facilitated by DGH graduate Michaela Leslie-Rule, MPA, MPH: The stories of girls in Rwanda through digital storytelling.
