Department News Seattle Non-Profit’s Role In Newly Approved Vaccine For Deadly Brain Disease (Kathleen Neuzil, MD, PhD Interviewed), KUOW, November 7. Ross Reynolds talks with Dr. Kathy Neuzil about a vaccine for the deadly brain disease Japanese encephalitis that has been recently approved by the World Health Organization. Dr. Neuzil is a professor in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health and the director of the Vaccine Access and Delivery Program at Seattle’s PATH, where the vaccine was tested. Find out more about Dr. Holmes’ future plans in his fourother roles at UW. Deo Niyizonkiza Brings Health to Burundi, Finds Help and Hope (Spoke at UW 11/14), The Seattle Times, November 13. Deo Niyizonkiza escaped death and the misery of Burundi, but the struggles of people in his village brought him back to help them repair their lives. He founded Village Health Works, which started as a small clinic, and now provides a whole range of services from health care to education, and it has become a place not just to heal bodies, but to sow peace and renewal. He spoke at UW on November 7th. UW START students present initial findings on differences in disease burden estimates to Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, November 18. Disease burden estimates vary, sometimes greatly, depending on who is providing the estimate. On November 15th, two UW Department of Global Health START students and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation staff presented their recent work to unpack the drivers of the differences in the global disease burden estimates for pneumonia and diarrhea. By further understanding differences in disease burden estimates, experts and local health agencies can better allocate resources to address specific types of pneumonia and diarrhea. Photo of the Week Deo Niyizonkiza, who escaped the Burundi civil war, said UW Family Medicine Dr. Kris Sherwood was the first American to return with him to Burundi to help start Village Health Works. “He went through hell on Earth,” Niyizonkiza said of Sherwood.
