Student volunteer opportunity with The American Diabetes Association

The American Diabetes Association has a volunteer opportunity for you! Every year, the ADA organizes a week long camp for kids with diabetes. It is a very unique camp because it is integrated into a traditional summer camp with kids who do not have diabetes. The ADA’s role is to manage all of the medical care for the diabetic campers so they can enjoy summer camp! We plan to have 70 campers this summer, out of about 250 kids total. It takes a lot of volunteers to make this camp happen; we are very interested in involving students who are going into the healthcare field and who want to learn more about taking care of kids with diabetes. The ADA Diabetes Camp is held at Camp Sealth on Vashon Island. It will be from Monday August 4th to Saturday August 9th, 2014. Volunteers need to be able to stay at Camp Sealth for least 3 days but are welcome to stay for the entire week. Room and board are provided. Volunteer duties include helping kids check their blood glucose levels and managing them if they are too high or too low. No prior experience with this is needed, although it is helpful, as there will be training before camp to teach you everything you need to know! If you are interested in helping out, please email Justin Platts at the ADA for more information. He can be reached at JPlatts@diabetes.org.
