Capillaries: The Journal seeking student submissions

Capillaries: The Journal of Narrative Medicine is a project currently funded by a 2019-2020 Resilience Lab and Campus Sustainability Seed Fund. Capillaries’ mission is to provide students of all majors and backgrounds with the opportunity to write and create works of art about their experiences with health.

Submitted works can range anywhere from personal anecdotes to reflections/articles on community/national/global health issues. In previous publications, they shared stories of love and loss, of coming to terms with identity, and of understanding what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st century. Previous journals can be viewed on their website: https://capillariesjournal.weebly.com/journals.html

Students can submit assignments/essays that they have previously worked on or are working on in the class for publication in the journal. The submission deadline for the Autumn 2019 publication is Monday October 21st @ 11:59.

Health technology research volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to assist with a health technology pilot project this Fall and Winter (2019/20).

The study would involve interaction with patients and testing of a novel sensor related to chronic disease monitoring and management.

This would be a great opportunity for students with interests in health and/or technology and want to learn about collaborative, team-based clinical research involving novel technologies.

Shyam Gollakota, PhD (Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering)

Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant opportunities at Seattle Children’s

Seattle Children’s Hospital is hiring for phlebotomist/lab assistant roles in their hospital clinical laboratory. They have openings regularly for both full-time and part-time roles.  

The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant III will provide age-appropriate phlebotomy services; perform laboratory specimen processing; use clinical information systems to fulfill laboratory orders; provide results of testing and other information to patient care teams; create accounts for laboratory specimens in hospital demographics/billing system; train new employees; participate in process improvement efforts aimed at improving direct patient care and flow of specimens through the laboratory.

They prefer candidates with previous phlebotomy or laboratory experience, but occasionally do on-the-job training for candidates who at least have college-level science coursework. They are willing to train staff who are a good fit. They often hire students who are planning on applying to nursing or medical school programs who are in need of direct patient care experience.

Medical Assistant Full-time Position

Dermatology Arts (dermatologyarts.com) is looking for a professional, highly motivated, and experience-driven employee to join their team of medical assistants in their Bellevue, WA office.

As a Medical Assistant, you will learn to conduct patient intake interviews, document medical histories, assist with procedures, schedule appointments, receive referrals, prepare prescriptions, and more. You will work alongside their providers and learn medical techniques and terminology, and best charting and patient education practices through shared patient care responsibility.

This position is best suited for seniors in college who can work part-time or college graduates who can work full-time. Many of their Medical Assistants have continued into medical schools, PA programs or Nursing programs.

Prior experience as a medical assistant is not a requirement to apply. You will have the opportunity to earn your Medical Assistant registration through your training.  Their program is typically for two years following college.

Individuals who have scribed prior to joining Dermatology Arts have described their environment as much richer in terms of experience and exposure.

Fall Course on Transformational Technologies for Biology, Medicine & Health

BIME 300 (Fall Q, 2019): Transformational Technologies for Biology, Medicine and Health

How are new information technologies affecting health care and medicine? When you visit the doctor, are they using modern information management methods? Are medical errors more likely or less likely to occur with new technologies? And how will new knowledge about the human genome affect health care?

As a career, there are growing opportunities at the intersection of medicine, information science, and big data science. This new course will introduce the field of biomedical & health informatics through three modules that focus on current technologies in the field:

  • Electronic health records
  • Simple Data Mining from electronic health data
  • Translational bioinformatics & personalized medicine

Each module will include hands-on exercises, and course evaluation will be based primarily on team projects that explore the technologies involved. The team project include both written and analytic portions, where the analysis portion includes a very simple level of programming.

The course meets MW 10:30-12:20, with a lab on Tues 12:30-1:20. There are no prerequisites.
