Responsibilities: The Research Assistant will work closely with the Translational Research Program study team to recruit and enroll participants, with and without autoimmune disease, conduct study visits and maintain study records in accordance with specified protocol and procedures for the Translational Research Program Immune Mediated Disease Registry and Repository.
• As part of a study team, assist with developing and carrying out recruitment strategies.
• Arrange, conduct and record study visits with participants to collect data and obtain biologic samples following strict protocols and processes. This may include blood draws, collecting vitals, obtaining tissue samples from standard of care procedures, screenings and in person interviews.
• Maintain accurate and concise participant records, ensuring completeness and accuracy of information. This includes manual and electronic documentation.
• Develop and maintain positive, professional communications with participants, scientists, medical providers and support staff.
• Complete various aspects of regulatory requirements including documentation and reporting.
• This is not a lab-based position.

University of Washington School of Dentistry’s ASDA chapter is hosting Dive into Dentistry Day on Saturday, July 27th.

This workshop gives you the chance to get hands on experience and gain an insider’s perspective on life in dental school. Learn how to drill and fill a cavity preparation, sculpt a tooth out of wax, suture, take an impression, and ace your dental school interviews. This is a great opportunity to learn about dental school, meet some fellow pre-dents, and get your questions answered.

BIME 498 (Fall Q, 2019): Transformational Technologies for Biology, Medicine and Health

How are new information technologies affecting health care and medicine? When you visit the doctor, are they using modern information management methods? Are medical errors more likely or less likely to occur with new technologies? And how will new knowledge about the human genome affect health care?

As a career, there are growing opportunities at the intersection of medicine, information science, and big data science. In this new course, we introduce the field of biomedical & health informatics through three modules that focus on current technologies in the field: (1) Electronic health records, (2) simple Data Mining from electronic health data, and (3) Translational bioinformatics & personalized medicine. Each module will include hands-on exercises, and course evaluation will be based primarily on team projects that explore the technologies involved. The team project include both written and analytic portions, where the analysis portion includes a very simple level of programming.

The course meets MW 10:30-12:20, with a lab on Tues 12:30-1:20. There are no prerequisites.

The Origins of MEDEX Northwest

Launched in 1969 at the University of Washington in Seattle, MEDEX is the second oldest PA program in the U.S., and it remains the country’s largest civilian PA program. Born out of a serious doctor shortage, it was the vision of Dr. Richard A. Smith that helped launch the physician assistant profession. On the occasion of MEDEX’ 50th anniversary, this 20-minute video details the heroic path of Dr. Smith and others to bring PAs into the U.S. medical system.

UW Healthcare Alternative Spring Break (HCASB) is looking for motivated and responsible undergraduates to serve as Team Leaders for next year’s spring break healthcare shadowing trip. Being a Team Leader provides a great leadership opportunity as well as a chance to shadow healthcare professionals for approximately 30-35 hours during spring break in 2020. You will also have the opportunity to expand both your written and verbal communication skills with healthcare professionals and your pre-health peers.

They are looking for undergraduates (first-year through third-year) who will be present on-campus next year and have an interest in healthcare to help set up shadowing positions across Washington, Idaho, and Oregon for Spring Break in 2020.

The Team Leader role includes contacting hospitals and clinics in rural communities throughout the rural Pacific Northwest to arrange shadowing for a small group of pre-health students, reaching out into the community to find host housing, and supervising your group throughout the trip. As you immerse yourself in your shadowing experience, you will have the opportunity to learn and experience healthcare disparities first-hand. You will conclude your trip with community service in the rural community; past opportunities have included inspiring high school students to pursue a post-secondary education as well as teaching a GED class to migrant workers.

Responsibilities

Seattle Children’s Innovative Technologies Lab (SCITL) is dedicated to developing everyday technologies for improving the lives of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities.

Their WONDER study will study the development of the social brain over the first three years of life with an ultimate goal of studying developmental trajectories of infants born at risk for developmental delays. The longitudinal project sees infants at 6-, 12-, 24-, and 36-months-old and uses eye tracking and brain imaging technologies as well as developmental assessments to map early brain development. All work will be done from Seattle Children’s Research Institute in downtown Seattle.

What to expect:

• Hands-on involvement with participants during their study visits.
• Train to assist staff during experimental sessions with families
• Observe and film standardized developmental assessments.
• Data entry, data management, and visit preparation and tracking.
• Occasionally provide childcare to older siblings.
• At a minimum students volunteer in 3 hour shifts twice a week (typically during business hours)

Skills/Experience Preferred:

• Detail-oriented, reliable
• Ideally have previous experience with infants or young children.
• Experience or interest in experience with children with special needs is a plus.
• Reliable transport downtown and punctuality is a requirement.

Commitment:

• Three consecutive quarter minimum

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team is looking for qualified and motivated undergraduates who want to get involved and gain experience in public policy and bioethics. UW iGEM is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of synthetic biology. It encompasses education, an international competition in Boston, the development of an open community, and the collaboration of university students.

They are looking for first-year through third-year students who have experience within Bioethics, Public Policy, Bioengineering, English, research or any other relevant majors/activities. The role includes communicating with stakeholders, receiving experience writing public policy initiatives, analyzing government bills, and presenting our findings to our community. Consequently, with changing international and domestic policies in synthetic biology, you will receive first-hand exposure to the obstacles and the ambiguity of the current legislation encompassing synthetic biology, while establishing innovative solutions.

Students should be able to commit 5-10 hours a week, reside in Seattle during the summer, and be able to work on the project until October 28, 2019.
