Team Leader Applications: for the 2018-2019 school year, we will be doing two rounds of Team Leader applications; one this spring and one in the fall. We will fill some of our Team Leader spots this spring and then fill the remaining spots in the fall. The spring Team Leader application is now open and will close on Wednesday, May 23rd at 11:59PM! We encourage you to check our website for more information regarding the Team Leader responsibilities. Please note that if you are not successful with your application in the spring, you will still have the opportunity to apply again in the fall. Dental Admissions Event Next Week

The UW American Student Dental Association (ASDA) is collaborating with the UW Delta Delta Sigma Pre-Dental club to host an admissions workshop!

With only a month until the new cycle starts, this is a great opportunity for Pre-Dental students to get some insight into the application process. There will be a short presentation from an Admissions Committee Member, a panel of current dental students, and a small group session with the panelists.

Additional BIOC 405/406 course offerings in 2018-19

As an FYI to prehealth students needing to take BIOC 405/406:

In the 2018-19 school year, BIOC 405 will be offered both in Autumn 2018 and Winter 2019 quarters.  BIOC 406 will be offered in Winter 2019 and Spring 2019.

This should provide greater flexibility as you plan completion of your coursework in advance of applying to health professional school.  Happy spring!

Wy’esat Post-Baccalaureate Pathway at OHSU

We are excited to announce that the Northwest Native American Center of Excellence is offering a pathway into medicine for American Indians and Alaska Natives: Wy’east Post-Baccalaureate Pathway.

Wy’east will prepare American Indian and Alaska Native students for successful application to medical school and to excel as medical students and physicians. There are two pathways for entering students, an Academic Enhancement Pathway and a Career Change Pathway. Successful completion of the Academic Enhancement Pathway results in conditional acceptance into the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine.

The application opens May 1st 2018 and closes May 27th 2018. There is no application fee.

ETCH is accepting officer applications!

Education Transforming Community Health (ETCH) is accepting officer applications!

ETCH is an interdisciplinary student project associated with SHIFA, a non-profit organization based out of UWSOM. We offer weekly health education sessions to homeless adults in downtown Seattle, striving to create health education curriculum that bridges evidence-based practice and the voices of the many homeless communities in Seattle.  We aim to provide knowledge, skills, and tools to improve the quality of life of our participants.

Weekly sessions offer volunteers a great opportunity to connect with members of homeless communities while expanding your knowledge of preventative care, health systems, and social justice. We ask that volunteers participate in at least one session per month for at least 6 months.

As an officer, you can expect to gain an even deeper understanding of the health needs and challenges of an underserved community in Seattle that often feels voiceless.

Applications close May 6th at 11:59 pm. Experience interacting with the homeless community is highly recommended.

Priority is also given to those that will be students next year, however we still encourage all to apply. If you are an alumni, you can still volunteer and stay connected through ETCH that way if you so please.

UGR Symposium 5/18 — Volunteers still needed!

The Undergraduate Research Program will host the 21st Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 18th.

More than 1,200 students will be presenting their work in four poster sessions, 39 oral presentations sessions, a performing arts session and a visual arts & design showcase in the 21st Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

They are still in need of volunteers, especially for session assistants and early shift registration.

Please consider volunteering! They provide lunch for all volunteers.

Summer Camp Opportunity for Pre-Health Students

Do you still need something fun to do this summer? Are you energetic, creative, and enthusiastic? Do you like working with youth and being a part of a FUN team? Are you looking to gain experience in the healthcare field or working with people with special health care needs?

If YES, then Camp Promise-West is looking for YOU!

Camp Promise-West (www.camppromise.org) is a one-week overnight camp that is provided free of charge for kids, teens, and adults with muscular dystrophy and select neuromuscular diseases. We believe all kids should get to experience the magic of camp, regardless of their medical needs or physical abilities. Our schedule is jam packed with theme days, pranks, costumes, summer fun, and activities that are 100% wheelchair accessible.

We highly valuable our volunteers that make camp possible and are looking for mature, responsible and fun individuals to join our team.

Available positions include: One-on-one counselors to provide personal care and assist with daily activities; Program staff (photographers, yearbook editors, camp newspaper, computers, science, sports, drama, music, etc.); and Medical staff (licensed nurses, doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, etc.)

This is an ideal opportunity for individuals who are dedicated to giving back to their community and/or who are interested in a career in the healthcare field and are looking for experience working one-on-one with individuals with special healthcare needs. Many (but not ALL!) of our volunteers are pre-health students (e.g., medicine, nursing, physician assistants, PT/OT) or interested in social work or counseling, or are graduate students/professionals in these fields.

While helpful, experience is not required as we provide all necessary training at our orientation session prior to camper arrival.

Our volunteers are 16+, come from diverse backgrounds and from all over the country, so whatever your skills may be, if you are committed to making camp the best week of our campers’ year, we’d love to hear from you!

Camp Details:

Dates: August 20-August 25, 2018 (volunteers arrive August 19th)

Location: Vaughn, WA

AADSAS access opens May 15th

Gain Early Access: Start the 2019 ADEA AADSAS Cycle in Mid-May!

 Ready? Set? Let’s Get Started! The 2019 ADEA AADSAS® (American Dental Education Association Associated American Dental Schools Application Service) “soft opens” on May 15, 2018, allowing applicants to start the 2018-2019 application three weeks prior to the official opening.

  • For advisors, encourage prospective students to take advantage of extra preparatory time. Prepare in mid-May, then submit as early as June 5, 2018.
  • For applicants, this added preparatory time ends the pressure to submit same-day, resulting in applications at-the-ready for submission on June 5, 2018.
  • The submission period runs from June 5, 2018 to February 1, 2019.

 Top Benefits for Applicants

  • Gain Early Access. With an early start in mid-May, applicants may submit in early June once the cycle opens.
  • Plan Ahead. Applicants now have extra time to learn what the application requires and what is needed for its completion before having to submit it.
  • Submit Early. Now applicants may time a submission to submit in the month of June for an early submission.
  • Manage Application Costs. Applicants who request an ADEA Fee Assistance may obtain a decision in June.

 Starting June 5, 2018:

  • Applicants and reapplicants, make the choice to submit early—June 5, 2018 is the first date to submit an ADEA AADSAS application.
  • If all official transcripts are received, ADEA AADSAS will start the application verification process.
  • Applicants who submitted all required documents for ADEA Fee Assistance will begin receiving decision statuses.

Free drop-in mental health resources for spring quarter

Here are the drop-in mental health resources for spring quarter.  These are FREE resources available for students.  No appointments necessary.  Students can just show up.

  • Mindfulness for Daily Living with Ron Ma, 2-2:45pm (NEW TIME) on Thursdays (through the last week of class) in 401 Schmitz Hall
    • Mindfulness meditation is a practice that helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression by cultivating greater self-awareness and a sense of inner peace.
  • Mindfulness for Anxiety, Depression and Trauma Workshop 2-2:45pm on several Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays for students’ convenience in 401 Schmitz Hall. This workshop by Caitlin Stanaway reviews the symptoms of generalized anxiety, major depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.  Participants can learn about Dialectical Behavior Therapy (focused on building skills in the areas of mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (focused on how thoughts, mood and behaviors interact).  Goals:
    • Increased understanding of mental health symptoms
    • Effective coping strategies to practice
    • Specifying personal goals and/or goals for treatment
  • Mental Health for the People workshop with Andrea Salazar on Friday 6/1 at 3pm in 401 Schmitz Hall.  This is a new quarterly workshop series is focused on mental health topics from a social justice perspective. The topic for spring quarter is The Impact of Colorism on Communities of Color.

  • Let’s Talk.  Drop-in consultation with a counselor, a collaboration between the Counseling Center and Hall Health Center
    • Tuesdays 2-4pm with Iris Song at the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center
    • Wednesdays 2-4pm with Kate Fredenberg at the Q Center in the HUB
    • Offered during the 10 weeks of each quarter.
