Peer Health Educator opportunity — applications open now

Are you passionate about mental health, alcohol and other drug education, preventing sexual assault, sex positivity, and healthy relationships?

The Peer Health Educators seek to bridge the gap between college health issues and campus resources. Under the Office of Health and Wellness, they facilitate workshops about these topics to different student groups and plan events to promote healthy living. They aim to make UW a safer, healthier place.

Their application will be released January 30, 2018 and it will be due February 13, 2018!

Cancer Startup Internship for Mandarin-English Speakers

Cancer Treatment Navigator is cancer startup in Downtown Seattle made up of researchers working in collaboration with oncologists around the country to identify new treatment options and clinical trials for patients based on the molecular components of their cancer. We are currently involved in a pilot project with a hospital in Shanghai to serve cancer patients in China and looking for a student capable of speaking both English and Mandarin Chinese to translate medical information between doctors and patients. This would be a great opportunity for anyone looking to gain clinical exposure or explore cancer as a specialty.

Leadership Positions for 2018-19 with Grey Matters Journal

Hello everyone!

Grey Matters Journal is recruiting for leadership positions for the 2018-2019 school year! The application deadline is February 9th. For those of you who don’t know, Grey Matters is UW’s undergraduate neuroscience journal committed to making science accessible to the public. We are looking for motivated, passionate students who would like to help us accomplish our mission of neuroscience education and outreach.

Listed below are the positions available for 2018-2019. Please send all necessary application materials to thalamus@uw.edu:

Editing Coordinator–They oversee our editing team, review all editor applications, and create groups of editors and authors for each production cycle. If interested, please send us a cover letter, resume, editing sample, and a technical and non-technical writing sample.

Production Manager–They edit and proofread articles during the quarter and complete other managerial tasks. If interested, please send a cover letter, resume, editing sample, and a technical and non-technical writing sample.

Design Director–They are in charge of all journal design and layout. The Design Director also recruits other designers, oversees their work, and puts together the final journal layout. Must have serious experience with Adobe InDesign. If interested, please send a cover letter, resume, and a portfolio (either online or PDF).

Art Director–Oversees our team of artists, manages illustrations throughout the quarter, and digitally edits artwork so it is ready for print. Also creates artwork for the journal when needed. If interested, please send a cover letter, resume, and a portfolio (either online or PDF).

Digital Media Manager–Responsible for managing Grey Matters’ social media accounts and website. If interested, please send a cover letter and resume.

Fundraising Coordinator–Oversees the Grey Matters store and manages budgeting and fundraising for the journal. If interested, please send a cover letter and resume.

The Alan R. Spence Transfer Support Fund was established to support transfer students in their educational pursuits at the University of Washington.  Dr. Spence had a long career as an educational leader at several Washington state community colleges, including 24 years at Pierce College. Valuing the community college system as a place where student can begin their journey through higher education regardless of their circumstances and backgrounds, Dr. Spence worked tirelessly to ensure that institutional barriers would not impeded a student’s ability to be successful. This year, the Spence Fund will award 3-4 scholarships of $1000 each to UW students who entered as transfer students.

UW Diversity Leadership Conference

  Register now!

Dear Students,

Registration is open now for the 2018 Diversity Leadership Conference: Understanding Self in the Context of Community.

This *FREE* half-day conference is open to all undergraduate students, and provides an opportunity for skill-building, connection with staff and community facilitators, and exploration of current and relevant leadership topics and concepts.

Students can elect to participate in the Leadership Workshop Track (rotating workshops, all levels and class years) or can apply to participate in the Advanced Leadership Track (a more intensive 3-hour training led by UW staff, juniors and seniors preferred). Students who wish to participate in the Advanced Leadership Track must submit their application for participation by Monday, January 29 at 9:00 a.m. More information on the workshops and conference can be found on the Husky Leadership Initiative website.  The event will feature a keynote address from Dr. Alexes Harris (UW Department of Sociology), and will close with a networking reception featuring recent UW alumni (appetizers provided).

Medical School Application Workshop hosted

Interested in a career in medicine? Looking for advice from current medical students who recently went through the process?

First-year medical students at the UW School of Medicine will be holding a medical school application workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 13th @ 6 pm. There will be an overview of the application process, Q&A session, and workshops on the following topics:

  • Premed 101 – everything from premed prerequisites to valuable experiences, such as volunteering and shadowing
  • The Personal Statement – telling your compelling narrative
  • The AMCAS Activities Section – tips for completing this key component of the primary application
  • Letters of Recommendation – identifying your best advocates and receiving strong letters
  • Secondary Applications (and the Dangers of Student Doctor Network) – how to craft strong supplementary essays

Whether you are new to being premed or are gearing up for the coming application cycle, there is something for everyone! All undergraduate students and recent graduates are welcome to attend.

Scan Design Innovations in Pain Research Summer Program – Deadline February 15, 2018

Millions of people in the U.S. alone suffer from debilitating chronic pain. The Innovations in Pain Research Summer Program will expose 7 University of Washington undergraduate students to interdisciplinary research in pain to stimulate interest in future careers in pain research. This program will immerse undergraduate students in research to better understand pain and treatment mechanisms, develop new therapies, and improve access to evidence-based pain care.

Undergraduates in biological sciences, psychology, nursing, social work, and/or engineering-related fields who are interested in exploring either basic science or clinical research in pain treatment are encouraged to apply.

The course is designed for UW students and alumni who are planning to apply in the current year to graduate-level health professional programs, including dental, medical, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant and veterinary schools.

Class time will include small group work, short lectures, and visits from experts, including admissions officials and health professionals. Seminar participants will be able to:

  • Identify salient criteria for choosing target schools
  • Articulate personal fit with their health profession of interest
  • Prepare a compelling application to a health professional program

New offering in spring: Psychology 206, Human Development

The UW Psychology Department is excited to announce that they will offer an in-person version of Psych 206, Human Development, in the spring.

It will be at 9:30 AM Monday-Friday in Kane 120 with a cap of 300 spaces.

This may be a good class for students who need a developmental psychology course for Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and other health professions.

While their Psych 306 class is restricted to students in the Psychology major, but the 206 class is open to any students at the UW.

Application for Undergraduate Research Symposium now open

The application for the 21st Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium is now open!  The Sym­po­sium will be held on May 18, 2018 in Mary Gates Hall.

The Symposium is a celebration of undergraduate accomplishments in research, scholarship, and creative expression in all academic disciplines.

Students may present their research either in a poster session or an oral presentation session.  They will also have a dedicated performance space in nearby Meany Hall for performing arts presentations and a visual arts and design showcase in Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

Last year, over 1,200 students participated in this exciting event.

To learn more and start an appli­ca­tion, visit the Under­grad­u­ate Research Sym­po­sium sec­tion of the URP web­site. All UW under­grad­u­ates involved in research are encour­aged to apply. The appli­ca­tion dead­line is Feb­ru­ary 13, 2018.

Interested students are also encouraged to attend on of our upcoming Abstract Writing Workshops to assist you with your application.

Not yet involved in research? Vol­un­teer or stop by on the day of the event to learn more about the research that UW under­grads are par­tic­i­pat­ing in, from projects in syn­thetic chem­istry to new ideas in the realm of dance.
