ScribeAmerica is currently looking to recruit students to work as Scribes in the Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics departments at The Polyclinic in Seattle, WA.  The scribe will work one on one with board certified physicians assisting with documentation for each patient evaluated by the doctor.  It is an exceptional opportunity for any student interested in medicine to gain first-hand experience following a physician in an emergency department setting.

The role of a scribe is to closely collaborate with their assigned physician by documenting the history of each patient evaluated, the doctor’s physical examination, the results of laboratory/radiological studies ordered, and the eventual diagnosis and disposition.  Becoming a scribe provides the student with first rate exposure to medical terminology, disease processes, procedures, medications, and the medical decision making process performed by outpatient physicians.

This job is not for everyone; the complexity of the material and fast-paced environment necessitate that only the sharpest and most motivated students succeed as a scribe. We are looking for dependable and hard working employees that have a desire for an eventual career in medicine, or are interested in learning more about careers in medicine.  There are multiple shifts throughout the week and each shift consists of following a single physician, usually lasting 8-10 hours. It is expected that each scribe can commit to 2 shifts per week for at least 2 years.

Paid classroom & clinical training is provided. The training is extensive and intense. Each employee will have multiple training sessions both in the classroom and the emergency department during which we teach the flow of the emergency room, extensive medical terminology, and appropriate medical/legal documentation.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity which has demonstrated itself to be excellent experience for students preparing for careers in medicine.  Our past employees that excelled as scribes have gone on to receive outstanding evaluations in their clinical trials and residencies.

Hello Huskies!

Thank you to everyone who came out to Eta Tau Eta Prehealth Service Society’s table at last week’s RSO fair. It was great meeting you all. I hope everyone is getting a good start to the quarter.

Our next general meeting will be next Tuesday at 6:00 PM, in Smith 115. Come meet all of the officers and fellow pre-health students! Nutritional Sciences Minor

Interested in nutrition? Want to know more about food systems and public health? The Minor in Nutritional Sciences is a strong addition for students interested in health fields. Students pursuing the minor are presented with a multidisciplinary perspective on the field of nutritional sciences, including its metabolic/biochemical, behavioral, and public health aspects.

The UW chapter for the American Mock World Health Organization is hosting an information session for students that would be interested in joining our Board Committee for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Our chapter began in 2016 and successfully hosted a regional conference in Spring 2017. In an effort to expand our community we would like to encourage students from all backgrounds and all class ranks to come to this info session on October 11 from 4:30 – 5:30 pm in HUB 238 to learn more about AMWHO and what we do.

We will provide snacks and host and informal Q and A during the second half of the presentation.

Interested in Dentistry and dental school, but don’t know what it entails? The UW Pre-Dental section of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) is organizing a seminar style class for pre-dental students called Basic Dental Education Principles (BDEP), where we are planning on having lecture presentations given by current dental students on subjects that we learn in dental school. The purpose of this course is to give pre-dental students an idea of what to expect in dental school, and so that they have a basic understanding of some concepts prior to entering dental school!

This is going to be an ongoing class almost every Thursday from October 12th to November 30th, held in Health Sciences Building in T733 from 5:30pm-7pm. Please refer to the attached flyer that has a detailed schedule of each seminar session. This is not a course you need to register for, but those that attend all seven sessions will receive a certificate of completion. It is open to all students, of any class standing, and those that are not currently enrolled in school.

Come visit Husky CERT’s first meeting in Allen Library Red C at 4:30pm! This event is held to showcase everything that the Club has to offer to incoming students and other undergraduates, whether they are areas of leadership, volunteering opportunities, or debate and  support groups. We will even have free food available for new members and a cool club T-shirt raffle!

Husky CERT provides standby first aid support at campus events as well as helping out around the community for associations such as WAAALK for Autism and Relay for life.  The club has close ties with certified BLS and first aid trainers and offers discounted rates for uw students and staff  We are working to incorporate new fun ideas such as EMS ethical debates and journal readings.

Fall quarter always brings so many opportunities and resources for students! The Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards is offering a plethora of scholarship workshops, information sessions, and opportunities for undergraduates and Bachelor’s alumni to explore a wide range of funded opportunities. A flyer is attached detailing some of our fall workshops for undergrads on various aspects of searching and applying competitively for scholarships. Additional info and dates are available on our website and events calendar. And included below is a highlight listing of just a few of the national scholarships with sessions and deadlines in the next few weeks.

Scholarship Fridays: Every Friday, 3:30pm in MGH 171, starting Oct. 6

Every Friday during fall quarter there will be scholarship-related information sessions in MGH 171. Our office is partnering with the Mary Gates Endowment for Students to offer alternating Friday sessions. This Friday, Oct. 6 will feature a session on Getting Started with Scholarships to give undergrads a head start into searching and applying competitively. Next Friday, Oct. 13, the Mary Gates Endowment for Students will offer an information session for students to learn about the Leadership and Research scholarships open to all UW undergrads. Sessions will alternate throughout fall quarter (10/20 Getting Started, 10/27 Mary Gates, etc.).

Upcoming Scholarship Highlights:

• Autumn Quarter Scholarships Snapshot: join us on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 4pm in MGH 171 for a brief introduction to some of the scholarships with deadlines happening during autumn quarter!
• Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship: deadline 10/27. UW Information Session: 10/12 at 4pm in MGH 258 with Professor Vincent Holmberg, Hertz Scholar alum and faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering! RSVP (though drop-ins are welcome).
  • Join Professor Holmberg to learn more and dispel myths about this opportunity for seniors wishing to pursue PhDs, and first-year grad students, in any of the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering who are US citizens or permanent residents. The fellowship provides a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend up to $32,000/year for up to 5 years. Attached is a flyer for additional information.
• DAAD Graduate Research or Study Scholarships in Germany: deadline 10/17/17 to compete for UW’s priority spot, or 11/1 for non-priority consideration. Awarded to highly qualified graduating seniors or those who have received an undergraduate degree of all disciplines may apply for the DAAD Study or Research Scholarships for a full master’s degree program at a German university, for study at a Germany university as part of a postgraduate or Master’s degree program completed in the home country, or for independent research in Germany.
• Public Policy & International Affairs program: deadline 11/1/17. UW information sessions: 10/6 at 11:30am or 10/12 at 4pm, both in MGH 171 (RSVP)
  • PPIA’s mission is to promote the inclusion and full participation of underrepresented groups in public service and to advance their leadership roles throughout our civic institutions serving domestic and international affairs. Each year, PPIA seeks out high-potential undergraduate students from universities across the country to participate in an intensive seven-week Junior Summer Institute (JSI) before their senior year. During their program, fellows are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in graduate school and ultimately, in influential roles serving the public good.
• Goldwater Scholarship: deadline 11/13/17. UW information sessions: 10/12 at 12:30pm, 10/17 at 2:30pm, 10/25 at 3:30pm, all in MGH 171 (RSVP).
  • The Goldwater Scholarship seeks to identify and support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this Nation’s next generation of research leaders in STEM fields. The scholarship provides $7,500 for one or two years, depending on graduation date. UW is able to nominate four students each year to compete for this national scholarship opportunity.
• Scholarships to make a difference: Truman and Udall Scholarships – UW information sessions 10/17 or 11/6 at 4pm, both in MGH 171 (RSVP)
  • The Harry S. Truman Scholarship supports graduate education and professional development of outstanding young people committed to public service leadership. The award amount is $30,000 to go toward graduate education.
  • Sophomore and junior level students can apply for the Udall Undergraduate Scholarships of up to $7,000. The foundation awards scholarships for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.
• Critical Language Scholarships: deadline 11/15/17. UW information sessions: 10/19 and 10/30 at 4:30pm in MGH 171 (RSVP).
  • The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. All expenses are covered for students selected to participate. Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu.
