American Physician Scientists Association: Undergrad Mentor Program

APSA

The American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) is a trainee-led student organization for trainees in all phases of the physician-scientist training pathway.

An important part of APSA’s mission is undergraduate mentorship, with the goal of fostering the success of undergraduate students interested in a career as a physician scientist.

APSA is now beginning the fourth year of our undergraduate mentorship program. Through the program, undergraduate students interested in pursing a career as a physician scientist are paired with professional student mentors (MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent).

The year-long program provides one-on-one mentorship to undergraduate students, giving these students a point of contact for information and advice about physician scientist training.

While APSA undergraduate membership is required for participation, APSA is offering free undergraduate membership to any student who self-reports financial hardship.

For information about the program, and a link to the application, please visit the APSA website at: http://www.physicianscientists.org/?page=ugmentoring

Health Professional School Admissions Panel & Interview Match 10/4

Interview match

Applying to health professional school? Nervous for your interview?

Register to be matched with a health professional student or alumni to receive one-on-one interview practice and advice!

  1. Attend the Admissions Advice Panel on October 4th from 5:00-6:30 in HUB 332.You will hear from admissions representatives and current students from medical, dental and pharmacy schools. There will be plenty of time for questions and talking with the panelists afterwards!
  1.  Register to be matched by October 8*
  1.  Receive your match by October 10 and set up an interview time any time before November 10
  1.  Let us help you ace your interview!

This interview match program is open to current UW juniors and seniors, as well as UW alumni who are currently applying to health professional school. Students of all levels and alumni are welcome to come to the Admissions Panel with no advance registration.

*Eligibility requirements:

In order to receive an interview match, you must either attend the Admissions Panel on October 4 or complete the short alternative assignment below. This is required because all interview volunteers are giving up their time to meet with you and we want all Pre-Health students to be prepared and respectful of their time.

We prefer that students try their hardest to attend the interviewing panel on October 4 because it is a special way to gain valuable insight into these interviews. However we also recognize your schedule might not work for the evening, so we have provided an alternative. As such, if you are unable to attend the Panel on October 4, you may still be eligible to receive an interview match.

Visit the Pre-Health Advising’s Applying to Health Professional School webpage to review links and tips about interviewing, including recorded sessions from UW Medical School about applying and interviewing and other helpful interview links.

After reviewing this webpage, answer the following two questions in 75-100 words and turn them in to a Career Counselor at the UW Career & Internship Center (134 Mary Gates Hall) during a Same-Day-Session by October 6.

  1. What is one new piece of information you learned about the interview process for health professional school?
  2. What would you like to work on practicing or improving for your interview for health professional school?

UW RSO Volunteer Opportunity

ETCH (Education Transforming Community Health) is recruiting new volunteers!

ETCH is an interdisciplinary student project associated SHIFA, a non-profit organization based out of the University of Washington School of Medicine. They offer weekly health education sessions to homeless adults in downtown Seattle, striving to create health education curriculum that bridges evidence-based practice and the voices of the many homeless communities in Seattle. ETCH aims to provide knowledge, skills, and tools to improve the quality of life of our participants.

Weekly sessions offer volunteers a great opportunity to connect with members of homeless communities while expanding your knowledge of preventative care, health systems, and social justice. Volunteers are asked to participate in at least one session per month for at least 6 months – with many more opportunities for volunteering, advocacy, and leadership.

This is an excellent opportunity to get involved, regardless of experience. If you are interested in joining, email etchseattle@gmail.com or visit http://www.etchseattle.org/ for more information!

More information can be found on their Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/ETCHseattle
