Request for childcare support from UW Medicine

UW Medicine is committed to continuing to provide outstanding healthcare during this challenging and rapidly changing environment. We know that the strain on our healthcare system will only increase from here – and by offering care to clinicians’ children during school and childcare closures, you can play a key role in ensuring that we can continue to provide excellent care to all who need it. These closures may otherwise threaten to compromise our healthcare workforce, but with your help, we can provide the support needed to keep our community healthy.

Whether for a half day, a whole week or even more, every bit of help makes a difference to our ability to provide essential care to those impacted by COVID-19 and their loved ones. We care about your health and the health of our community. If you are currently healthy and not regularly interacting with vulnerable populations (elderly, immunocompromised, pregnant women), we invite you to consider helping. If you can provide childcare in the coming weeks to support our healthcare workers and their families, please fill out an interest form which will allow a family or families in your area to contact you with their child care needs and how you can help them.

While you may opt to volunteer your time if you are able, we have established guidelines around recommended pay rates based on the number of children you will be caring for during the day that you can discuss with the families you will support.

Please take this opportunity to support our UW Medicine healthcare team members – and by extension, your friends, neighbors, and broader community affected by COVID-19 by joining our UW-wide response. We are all in this together and we will make it through by taking care of one another.

With deep gratitude for the incredible UW community we are all a part of shaping,

UW News: Premera Blue Cross teams with the UW to establish rural nursing program

To read full article: Premera Blue Cross teams with the UW to establish rural nursing program

Premera Blue Cross, a leading health plan in the Pacific Northwest, today announced a $4.7 million grant to the University of Washington to establish the Rural Nursing Health Initiative to place current students in rural practices in Washington state.

“Premera is proud to support the University of Washington School of Nursing in their efforts to deliver health care to remote and medically underserved communities,” said Jeff Roe, president and CEO of Premera Blue Cross. “We know that students who learn in rural settings are much more likely to return to that community when they graduate. With the growing disparity between urban and rural health care access, it is critical we invest in sustainable solutions that close that gap.”

The UW School of Nursing will spearhead the effort and will build the Rural Nursing Health Initiative over a four-year period, supporting 20 students each year. The program will create enhanced clinical placements for advanced practice registered nurse students, or APRNs, in rural areas throughout Washington, as well as build a pipeline for student placements and provider support, especially critical for rural communities without robust networks.

Synapse at the UW Buddy Program Applications Open 2020-2021

Synapse at the University of Washington is a student-led traumatic brain injury support group. We host peer support groups for individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), in addition to social events and social skills workshops. Our student members are an integral part of the organization, mostly participating through the Buddy Program which pairs them to an individual with a TBI. Buddy pairings are meant to foster a close friendship that helps reduce the barriers of social isolation often faced long-term post-injury for people with TBIs, and gives students interested in careers in healthcare an opportunity to work closely with this under-served community and invaluable experience interacting with this vulnerable population outside of a clinical setting. Buddy pairs commit to personal meetups ideally around twice a month, getting to know each other through casual social activities in addition to Synapse-organized events.

2020 APAMSA Regional VIII Conference Invitation

We are pleased to invite you to the 5th Annual Region VIII Asian and Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) conference: “Shaping Y(our) Future: Lights, Camera, Action!”

The members of APAMSA have witnessed many conferences and workshops that addressed the unique educational, leadership, healthcare, and cultural barriers that members of the APIA community face in their daily lives. This conference aims to understand what our impact might look like after just scratching the surface. With medicine becoming increasingly progressive with modern technology, it is important that APAMSA follow suit in our own unique way.

The theme should lead attendees to discover intersectionalities they are passionate about and to be inspired by their peers and mentors on the possible new advancements in the field. This regional conference rallies our energetic membership to refine and guide their ability to take positive actions in our community. While the past has countless stories, advice, and memories that can never be replaced — the future holds so much potential to reshape a better world than we were introduced to.

The 2020 Region VIII Conference will take place in Portland, Oregon at the OHSU Robertson Life Sciences Building on Saturday, April 18, 2020 with check-in starting at 8:30 AM. Lunch will be provided. This event is open to anyone in the community, including undergraduate, graduate and professional medical or non-medical students.

Volunteer at Camp Promise-Rockies this summer

Do you still need something fun to do this summer? Are you energetic, creative, and enthusiastic? Do you like working with youth and being a part of a FUN team? Are you looking to gain experience in the healthcare field or working with people with special health care needs?

If YES, then Camp Promise-Rockies is looking for YOU!

We are currently recruiting volunteers who are mature and responsible individuals, who like working hard and who are willing to learn.

Camp Promise-Rockies is a one-week overnight camp that is provided free of charge for kids, teens, and adults with muscular dystrophy and select neuromuscular diseases. We believe all kids should get to experience the magic of camp, regardless of their medical needs or physical abilities and highly value our volunteers who help make this happen. Our schedule is jam packed with theme days, pranks, costumes, summer fun, and activities that are 100% wheelchair accessible.

Available Positions include:

  1. One-on-one counselors to provide personal care and assist with daily activities.
  2. Program staff (photographers, camp newspaper, computers, science, sports, drama, music, etc.)
  3. Medical staff (licensed nurses, doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, etc.)

This is an ideal opportunity for individuals who are dedicated to giving back to their community and/or who are interested in a career in the healthcare field and are looking for experience working one-on-one with individuals with special healthcare needs. Many (but not ALL!) of our volunteers are pre-health students (e.g., medicine, nursing, physician assistants, PT/OT) or interested in social work or counseling, or graduate students/professionals in these fields.

While helpful, experience is not required as we provide all necessary training at our orientation session prior to camper arrival.

Our volunteers are 18+, come from diverse backgrounds and from all over the country, so whatever your skills may be, if you are committed to making camp the best week of our campers’ year, we’d love to hear from you!

Camp Details:

  • Dates: August 2-7, 2020
  • Location: Empire, CO
  • Requirements: Be at least 18 years old, submit an application, complete an interview, and pass background and reference checks. Please visit the requirements page of our website for more information.
