The UW's ties to China are deep-rooted
UW President Mark Emmert was in Hong
Kong, Beijing and Shanghai June 12-21, 2006,
meeting with dignitaries, educators and government officials. The university's ties to China date to 1909,
and the relationship has grown in significance and scope ever since.
During his trip, Emmert assessed how
the University of Washington is perceived, promoted the state's and the
UW's interests, and explored new opportunities. He also
reconnected with alumni.
His trip included meetings with:
-- Microsoft, Starbucks and Weyerhaeuser execs and many other
business leaders
-- Ministry of Education officials in Beijing
-- More than a dozen top university officials
-- U.S. Ambassador Clark T. Randt Jr.
-- U.S. Consul General James Cunningham
-- U.S. Consul General Kenneth Jarrett
-- Members of the UW's NCAA championship women's volleyball team
