Northwest Policy Center

The Northwest Policy Center (NPC) of the Evans School of Public Affairs is an applied policy research center that works with policy makers and practitioners to improve strategies for a vital Northwest economy with an emphasis on the health and well-being of the region's people, communities, and environment. NPC uses a variety of tools to advance these issues locally and regionally such as conducting policy research and analysis; examining, devising, and helping implement strategies; sharing information on 'best practice'; conducting study tours; sponsoring forums and workshops; conducting evaluations.

The Northwest Policy Center has recently conducted the following studies:

Northwest Job Gap Study: Is the Northwest Creating Enough Living Wage Jobs? Explores the gap between the number of living wage jobs being created in the Northwest and the number of people needing living wage jobs. Seeks to raise awareness and promote public dialogue about the job gap and policy options to address it (1999).

Toward a Sustainable Region: Evolving Strategies for Reconciling Community and the Environment. This report focuses on the progress of community based sustainable development initiatives in the Northwest. Includes case studies and lessons learned from local collaboration; the economic dimensions of conservation-based development; community-based approaches to alleviating poverty and enhancing respect for diversity; and policies and regional approaches to advance conservation-based development (1997).

Sustainable Community Checklist A workbook providing communities a hands-on opportunity to explore the complex and dynamic relationships among economy, community, and the environment (1996).

Past, present, and future economic analyses of the Northwest (1991 - 1996).
