Probcast: Creating and Communicating Probabilistic Weather Forecasts

J. McLean Sloughter
U.W. Ph. D.

Abstract:
    While the dominant approach in the atmospheric sciences is to issue deterministic weather forecasts, there are a number of situations in which probabilistic forecasts can offer additional information and value to users. This talk will discuss how statistical post-processing methods can be used to create probabilistic weather forecasts. We will look at how these methods have been implemented on the website http://probcast.com, and examine issues that arise in communicating probabilistic information clearly to users.

Other Meeting Agenda ----------------

* Elections:
The annual meeting of the chapter will occur at this chapter meeting. In accordance with the chapter constitution, we will solicit nominations
for chapter officers at the meeting, and voting for the officers will be by e-mail following the annual meeting. Several of the current officers are willing to run again. The current Vice President and Secretary are stepping down. If you would like to serve as a chapter officer or know someone else who should be an officer, nominations will be accepted at the chapter meeting on June 11 or you can contact the chapter secretary at ranjan.k.paul@boeing.com

* Chapter Finances:
The chapter has a rather healthy bank account balance. The ASA regularly warns chapters and sections about IRS guidelines regarding balances and we may be exceeding these (the treasurer is looking into this). We are soliciting ideas from the chapter on how and where we may want to spend some of our funds.
