BROWN BAG EVENT: The Birds and Wilderness of the Montlake Fill. Tue Dec 13, 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. Mary Gates Hall, Room 420. Connie Sidles will read from her new book Second Nature. Live video streaming of the PSO Fall Meeting for prostaff and guests. At UW Tacoma meet in room BHS107; at UW Bothell meet in room UW1-302.

For the Fall Meeting, please bring non-perishible food items, toiletries, diapers, or even reusable shopping bags and pet food for the University District Food Bank. (See their Wish List.) Monetary donations gratefully accepted.

PSO makes a trip to Olympia. The State Legislative Select Committee on Pension Policy (SCPP) met on Nov 15 to address the question of whether the Higher Education Retirement Plans like the UW Retirement Plan should remain an available option for newly hired exempt employees, among them many professional staff. Ten individuals testified before the committee including the PSO President, and successfully convinced the committee that keeping this option available will encourage recruitment and retention of exempt employees in higher education. The PSO congratulates the delegation for a job well done!

Be heard! UW Professional Staff meeting with Provost Search Committee. Friday, Oct 14, 1:30PM to 2:30PM. Allen Auditorium, Allen Library, Rm 81L.

The search for the next Provost of the University of Washington is underway. An important part of the search process is receiving input from UW staff. The Search Committee will hold a special meeting to hear advice from UW professional staff on the best qualities to look for in the next Provost, taking place on Friday, Oct 14, 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Allen Auditorium. Networking Opportunities! Free Ice Cream Social on Thursday, Oct 6, 4:30 to 6:00 at the Waterfront Activities Center. A message from Carmen Cook, PSO Events Committee Co-Chair: Autumn is here and school is back in session. This is prime time to pause, re-engage relationships, and look for new opportunities. In that spirit, be sure to attend Thursday's PSO Meet & Greet Ice Cream Social. We will be serving Ben & Jerry's ice cream. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet other professional staff and your PSO board members. I sincerely look forward to seeing you on Thursday afternoon. Bring your colleagues and friends. We are delighted with the level of interest among our members in the PSO sponsored POD class that was offered free of charge for the first 35 professional staff that registered. Highly successful, the maximum have pre-registered and there is a long waitlist. However, to dispel any confusion, the funds to offer this professional development opportunity were provided solely by the PSO through member contributions.

Reminder: Policy on partial day absences. For a partial day absence to, say, pay a visit to the doctor, how do professional staff account for leave? Is it sick time? You may be surprised. Learn the policy: Partial day absence.

UW Alumni Association Campus Wedding Fair: PSO members and their guests are invited to a free exhibition of campus venues for weddings and other special events. Meet with representatives from UW Event Services, The Horticultural Center, UW-preferred caterers and The University of Washington Club. Complimentary appetizers and beverages will be served. Dining Options on Campus. Wondering where to eat? There are numerous summer dining options for staff on campus this year. For a complete list of what's open and when, visit HFS' hours page for more information.

A few highlights ... 8 in McMahon Hall is again featuring an all-you-care-to-eat lunch program for UW staff all summer long for one set price ($6.50 for staff). Present your Husky Card I.D. for entry.

Motosurf, located on Red Square, is now serving breakfast in addition to lunch and opens every day this summer at 7:30am.

PSO Board Nominations Due Date EXTENDED to April 13th. Visit PSO Election to submit your nomination today!

We have extended the due date until April 13th for nominations for the annual election for the PSO Board of Directors. The election itself will take place electronically from May 1 to May 15. We hope you'll consider serving the UW by nominating yourself or a colleague (with their permission) to join the Board.

All professional staff are eligible to serve on the PSO Board of Directors. Members are eligible also to serve as officers including: president, vice-president, treasurer, or secretary. Duties of Board members include:

  • Attend Board meetings held on the third Tuesday of each month, from 11:30 AM to 1 PM

  • Serve on or chair a standing PSO committee or ad hoc committee

  • Serve on Faculty Senate council, e.g., Faculty Council on Retirement and Benefits, Faculty Council on Research

The time commitment for Board service is approximately 5 to 7 hours per month. Director positions are two-year terms while officer positions are one-year terms, each beginning on June 1, 2011.

The PSO, created by its members 21 years ago, represents the issues and concerns of professional staff to the UW administration, state legislature, and the community.

Nicolette Bromberg, Visual Materials Curator, UW Libraries, will introduce the remarkable historic photography collections held at the UW Libraries, and talk about the value of photographs for research and in history.

Legislative session discussion, Wed Jan 5th 1:00 - 2:30, UW Tower Auditorium - all invited to attend

The UW Office of Planning and Budgeting and the State Relations office are together conducting a discussion of the UW legislative agenda and expectations for the upcoming legislative session on Wednesday, January 5, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM at the UW Tower Auditorium. The 2011 Washington State legislative session will begin on Monday, January 10th, and it is expected to be another difficult year given the slow economic recovery and growing state budget deficit for the 2011-13 biennium.

Margaret Shepherd and Karin Yukish of UW State Relations and Sarah Hall and Jessica Thompson of the Office of Planning & Budgeting will lead the discussion. Light refreshments provided.

PSO news: WA Legislature passed supplemental operating budget

In a one-day emergency special session, the Washington State Legislature passed a compromise supplemental operating budget, reducing the current general fund deficit of $1.1 billion by $580 million. Volunteer opportunities

PSO Secretary - Become an officer of the PSO and learn about our activities first hand. Duties include attending the PSO Board meeting once a month (January through June) and composing notes on the business conducted at the meeting. Contact psopres@u.washington.edu.

Tacoma and Bothell Campus PSO Board Members - The PSO is looking for two board members that can represent professional staff at the each of the branch campuses. We are happy to accommodate virtual board meeting attendance. Contact psopres@u.washington.edu.

University Landscape Advisory Committee - The LAC is looking for a professional staff representative with expertise in campus planning, historic preservation, landscape architecture or architecture; she/he will serve a 3-year term if selected and is required to attend four all-day meetings in March, June, September and December. We hope this new space will improve navigation, supply easy access to resources, and be an attractive repository of relevant materials for professional staff at the University of Washington.
