UW Psychiatry Residency Training Program; Spokane Advanced Clinician Track

Application Process

Each year, we offer two PGY-1 and one PGY-2 positions in the Spokane program. All PGY-1 positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program and applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). PGY-2 applications are considered throughout the year, on a rolling admissions basis, until the position is filled. PGY-2 applicants should use our application form.

PGY-1 applications must be received by November 1st of the year prior to the starting academic year. Applications received after this date will be considered only on a very limited, case-by-case basis. Applicants are strongly encouraged to ensure completion of their applications (including all letters of reference) by November 1st. Dean's letters are generally sent out at the beginning of November. All applications are screened for completeness, qualifications for licensing, special experience, interests, training, strength of grades, content of letters of reference, and Dean's Letter.

On the basis of these factors, 20 - 30 applicants will be invited to Spokane for interviews. Because the first part of training for the Spokane Advanced Clinician Track takes place in Seattle, applicants will interview in both Seattle and Spokane, and whenever possible, interviews take place over two consecutive days during the peak recruitment period from November through January. Interviews in each location give candidates a chance to meet with a number of faculty and residents, and to visit various clinical sites. The program does reimburse the PGY-1 applicants, up to a $300 limit, for the cost of travel and lodging expenses between Seattle and Spokane.

Final selection decisions are made by the Admissions Committee. We do not offer positions, or make any binding commitments, to PGY-1 candidates before the results of the Match are known.

We do accept applications from International Medical Graduates. The medical demands of this residency program, however, are high. IMG applicants with: (a) eight-weeks of clinical experience comparable to a US or Canadian medical student rotation that is beyond a research or observer/volunteer level, and (b) letters from medical supervisors from the US, will be considered stronger candidates.

The following materials should be submitted by applicants:

  • ERAS Common Application (PGY-1 only)
  • UW Psychiatry Residency Application (PGY-2 only)
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • 3 or more letters of reference
  • Official medical/osteopathic school transcript
  • Dean’s Letter from your medical/osteopathic school
  • USMLE Score

For all applicants, please list any special areas of interest so we can schedule your interview day to allow you to meet faculty and residents with similar interests. Letters of recommendation should be addressed to:
