Providence Health & Services is the parent company of Providence Health Care, of which SHMC is the largest entity. Its primary service area is the Inland Northwest region, which includes Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Washington. SHMC Psychiatry services are extensive. The Adult/Geriatric Psychiatry Unit (AGPU) has 48 beds for both voluntary and involuntary patients; this includes two acute care areas. In addition, the Psychiatry Department has the Psychiatric Center for Children & Adolescents (PCCA), with a 6-bed unit for children up to age 12, a partial hospitalization program for children aged 5-12, and an 18-bed unit for adolescents. The numerous support programs for these services include a school with permanent teachers from the local school district, facilities and staff for recreational activities, and a wide variety of rehabilitation programs. 24-hour Psychiatric Triage is available as one of the services of Sacred Heart's large Emergency Department, which had nearly 63,000 patient encounters in 2006. SHMC has many centers of excellence: Cardiovascular, Children's Hospital, Providence Neuroscience Center, Trauma, Organ Transplant, Providence Cancer Center, Psychiatry, Women's Health Center, Bone and Joint program and more. SHMC also has a JCAHO-certified Stroke center. The wide array of medical services and treatments offered at Sacred Heart is reflective of today's health care advances. In addition, SHMC works collaboratively with other hospitals and organizations in the Spokane area where one program rather than several will more efficiently and economically serve the community. SHMC's commitment to graduate medical education is clear from its involvement in the Inland Empire Hospital Services Association (IEHSA), the governing body over several residency training programs including Family Medicine Spokane, Internal Medicine Residency Spokane, the Sacred Heart Medical Center Radiology program, and the Sacred Heart Medical Center and Deaconess Transitional Year programs. Medical students in the University of Washington WWAMI program routinely do 3rd- and 4th-year clinical clerkships in Spokane, including Psychiatry. Research at SHMC is conducted through Providence Medical Research Center. Staff, physicians and university researchers affiliated with the University of Washington, Washington State University, Eastern Washington University and other academic institutions blend their knowledge and skills to benefit many ongoing medical research studies based in Spokane. As Spokane and the surrounding areas grew, so did the hospital. Even in its earliest inception, the hospital was known for its patient care and advanced treatment procedures including infectious disease control, surgery and orthopedics. The progress and medical advancements made during those early years set a high standard that has guided Deaconess and will continue to do so well into the future-continuous, compassionate improvements in its services and quality of patient care. Residents fulfill part of their Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry requirement at Deaconess Medical Center, and further elective time in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry is also available.
