The Puget Sound Writing Project Presents

July 28-August 8, 2008
University of Washington, Tacoma Campus

Teachers say:
"PSWP gave me time to write, time to think, and time to plan. What a gift!"
"This class was taught with great respect and a focus on our needs to be creative and pursue our own interests as teachers, learners, and writers."
"Every activity taught me about a different aspect of writing, from planning for children to having my own writing reviewed."
PSWP's Open Institute, a participatory workshop, focuses on three areas:
WRITING
Most of us are at home as readers; not all of us feel equally at home as writers. This Institute
will nurture you as a writer, helping you reflect on your own writing process as you participate
in a community of writers.
TEACHING
You will have the opportunity to develop your classroom practice by working with the theory and
practice of writing instruction, learning how teachers' strategies can help students achieve their
potential as writers. You will participate in demonstrations and discussions of successful
practices, including those you have developed yourself in your own teaching and in your own writing.
You will have time to apply your thinking to developing strategies and curriculum to take back to
your own students.
LEARNING
You will examine current pedagogical theory as a member of a study group that reads and discusses material in an area of concern to you.
Some possible topics include:
- authentic assessments
- writing workshop
- writing for non-native speakers
- incorporating state standards
- the needs of diverse populations
- writing in the content areas
- integrating curriculum
Generally the day will begin with writing. Each day will also include mini lessons from
instructors and participants, as well as the sharing of resources. Writing group meetings,
individual research, group work, conferencing with instructors on individual projects,
and reflective logs round out the days.
WHO
Teachers K-12 in all subject areas who are interested in writing, including alumni of PSWP's
Summer Invitational Institute and of previous Open or Advanced Institutes who want to continue
their work on writing with a project of their own design.
