UW Psychiatry Residency Training Program; Idaho Advanced Clinician Track

Training Sites

The Idaho Advanced Clinician Track uses a variety of training sites in both Seattle and Boise, providing residents with a broad array of patient populations and clinical experiences.

In Seattle, first and second year residents rotate through the clinical services of the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, the VA Puget Sound Health Care System medical centers, and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. For more information about these sites, please visit our descriptions of the Seattle Training Sites.

In Boise, the main training sites for third and fourth year residents are the Boise VA Medical Center, St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, and the Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic.

St. Luke's Regional Medical CenterSt. Luke's Regional Medical Center is a 369-bed tertiary care hospital, particularly recognized for outstanding oncology, cardiology, obstetrics/newborn, and pediatrics services. Residents will complete consultation-liaison psychiatry rotations on these and other general medical and surgical services. St. Luke's is an active residency training site, where Family Medicine residents complete pediatrics, NICU, obstetrics, and emergency medicine rotations.

St. Alphonsus Regional Medical CenterSt. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center is a 281-bed tertiary care hospital and is the region's trauma center. St. Alphonsus is recognized for its cardiology, orthopedic care, trauma, neurosurgery, radiology, and critical care departments. Family Medicine residents do medicine, surgery, and emergency medicine rotations at this hospital. The St. Alphonsus Behavioral Health service includes 32 inpatient psychiatry beds for adults and children, and an outpatient service with over 11,000 visits per year, offering psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and addiction treatment services. Psychiatry residents will do outpatient and child psychiatry rotations at St. Alphonsus.

Boise VA Medical CenterThe Boise VA Medical Center serves 70,000 veterans and has established training programs for University of Washington Medicine residents and medical students. Psychiatry residents can take advantage of a rich array of rotations in outpatient psychiatry, substance abuse treatment, crisis intervention, group and family therapy, and consultation-liaison psychiatry at the Boise VA, and will have the opportunity to supervise and teach University of Washington medical students doing their required Psychiatry clerkship there.

The Family Medicine Residency of Idaho is a University of Washington-affiliated residency that trains 9 Family Medicine residents per year. The Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic has over 40,000 visits per year. Psychiatry residents will provide outpatient psychiatric consultation to family medicine faculty and residents in this clinic, as part of a team including a psychiatrist, psychologist, and social work staff.

Terry Reilly Health Services is a private non-profit community health center established in 1972 with a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service. The clinic provides comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health care to the medically underserved citizens of Idaho. Staff include family medicine physicians, psychiatrists and social workers. Residents rotating here will be included in the treatment team coordinating care for people with multiple medical and social challenges.

Other rotations available to residents in Boise will include electives in chronic pain treatment, sleep medicine, community psychiatry, PTSD, and forensic psychiatry. Many of the PGY3 and 4 rotations may be expanded to include more elective training in areas of specific clinical interest such as PTSD, Affective Disorders, Women's Health and Addictions.
