The Department

The University of Washington Department
of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is one of the foremost departments
in the country. There are 200 regular faculty, many of whom are nationally
and internationally recognized investigators and leaders in their field.
In addition, over 300 clinical faculty are active in teaching trainees.
Each year, the Department teaches 700 medical students, 64 psychiatry
residents, 11 psychology interns, and 25-30 postdoctoral fellows. The
Department has active research programs, with over 24 million dollars
annually in grant funding and over 25,000 square feet of laboratory space.
Research programs are enriched by collaborations with other University
of Washington departments, such as Psychology, Neurology, Neurosurgery,
Pharmacology, Physiology, Genetics, Epidemiology, and Health Services
Research.
Within our department, residents may elect to participate in research
in a wide variety of areas, including epidemiology, phenomenology and
treatment studies, health services, psychotherapy outcome, consultation-liaison
psychiatry, psychiatry in primary care settings, basic and clinical neuroscience,
molecular biology, genetics, psychopharmacology, addictions, dual diagnosis,
geriatrics and Alzheimer’s disease, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD), mood disorders, panic and anxiety disorders, seasonal affective
disorder, and psycho-oncology.
