The Resident may also transfer accumulated sick leave when the Resident is appointed to another UWSOM residency or fellowship program. Accumulated sick leave credit that is not transferrable shall lapse and is not compensable at the completion or expiration of the appointment to the Residency program. For more detail, please review the Residency Position Appointment.

Education Funds

The program provides each resident an annual education allowance of up to $200, which can be used towards the cost of attending professional meetings and conferences, textbooks, or other educational materials. Chief residents receive an additional $500.

Fringe Benefits

Residents may enroll in a University-paid insurance pan consisting of medical, dental, basic life insurance and basic disability income coverage. This plan, which provides for optional additional life insurance and disability income insurance that may be purchased by the individual, is designed and authorized by the Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB). Professional Liability Insurance is provided to all residents under a University of Washington Master Policy for all approved activities associated with residency training. Residents have the option of saving for retirement through the University of Washington Voluntary Investment Program (VIP). Taxes on contributions through the VIP program are tax deferred according to the provisions of this 403(b) program. Residents are entitled to staff privileges at the University of Washington including the use of libraries, on-line services, the Intramural Activities Building, and reduced prices on tickets for some sports and cultural activities.
