CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research focuses on defining the mechanisms that govern airway re-epithelialization and how inappropriate repair results in airway fibrosis (e.g., obliterative bronchiolitis). In particular, we have been studying how matrilysin (matrix metalloproteinase-7) facilitates re-epithelialization in the injured lungs. Utilized in vitro and in vivo models of airway epithelial injury, we have identified syndecan-1 as a putative substrate, which upon cleavage by matrilysin, relaxes cell-matrix adhesion allowing the injured epithelium to migrate over the wound. Matrilysin cleavage of syndecan-1 has also previously been identified to also play an important role in regulating lung inflammation after injury. Therefore, our findings may represent a method by which nature has co-opted two inter-related phenomena, namely repair and inflammation, into one biological process.
