CURRENT RESEARCH
INTERESTS
My objectives are to expand our understanding of
the natural history and epidemiology of acute
lung injury and the acute respiratory distress
syndrome (ARDS). I am specifically interested in
studying the risk factors, incidence, clinical
course, predictors of mortality, causes of death,
and the functional status of survivors of ARDS. I
am also interested in investigating the evolution
of the inflammatory process in the blood and the
lung to better understand the pathogenesis of
lung injury. Many of these studies utilize
bronchoalveolar lavage fluid obtained from
patients at risk for or with ARDS. Finally, I am
very involved with investigating new treatment
options for patients with, or at risk for, ALI
and ARDS.
These investigations will allow early
identification of patients at particularly high
risk for development of ALI and ARDS, as well as
identifying the inflammatory mechanisms involved
and their time course, interactions, and
correlation with clinical characteristics or
events. These data are necessary for the
appropriate design of clinical intervention
trials. The ultimate goal of providing this
information would be to enhance our ability to
identify specific interventions which are likely
to benefit patients at high risk for or with ALI
and ARDS.
