General
Information
he Fellowship Training
Program of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care
Medicine at the University of Washington selects from
among eligible applicants on the basis of their
preparedness and ability to benefit from the program.
Considered in the
selection process are aptitude, academic credentials,
personal characteristics, and communication skills.
In selecting from
among qualified applicants for first-year positions, the
Program participates in the National Resident Matching
Program in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
The fellowship
training program values diversity and encourages
applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Because our
fellowship program is primarily supported by the National
Institutes of Health, applicants should be eligible to
receive such funding--i.e., U.S. citizens or holders of
immigrant visas. Citizens of other nations with J1 or H1B
visas who intend to return to faculty positions in their
own countries following fellowship training may be
considered, although in most instances they would be
required to provide their own financial support while in
Seattle.
Application
Process
s of
December 2003, all applications for the combined program
are processed through the Electronic Residency
Application Service. Details regarding this service are
available at www.aamc.org/eras.
The following are required for
consideration in the application process:
 |
a completed application form |
 |
a statement of personal and career objectives |
 |
bibliography (if applicable) |
 |
medical school deans letter |
 |
letters of recommendation from at least three
individuals who have worked with and/or
supervised the training of the applicant |
All
application materials, including supporting letters, must
be received by January 31 for fellowship training to
begin in July of the following year.
Once complete as
described above, applications are reviewed by the
Fellowship Program Director. After
review of your completed application, you will be
notified as to the competiveness of your application in
comparison with other candidates from this and previous
application years. We typically receive over 150
applications for seven positions and are therefore only
able to personally interview a small subset of qualified
candidates.
Interviews will be
conducted during March and April; earlier visits may be
possible under exceptional circumstances, depending upon
faculty availability and other logistics.
Applicants
visiting Seattle will interview with members of the
Fellowship Selection Committee, and also spend time with
one or more current fellows. Those applicants considered
most qualified according to the goals and objectives of
the Program are subsequently ranked, with selections made
through the NRMP.
We participate in
the Medical Specialties Matching Program for Fellowships
in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. You should write
to the National Residency Matching Program for
appropriate registration forms, and your signed
participation agreement should be returned to them by the
