Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing
Purpose: Approximately 400 full cardiopulmonary exercise tests are performed annually at the University Pulmonary Diagnostic Laboratory to evaluate patients with underlying heart or lung disorders, patients with unexplained shortness of breath, or those with shortness of breath out of proportion to abnormalities detected on standard cardiac or pulmonary tests. This testing is used for evaluation for patients who may require heart or lung transplantation and for those who need objective evaluation of overall exercise impairment. We also offer exercise testing for recreational athletes beginning an exercise program, and testing for competitive athletes at all levels of accomplishment (VO2max, anaerobic threshold, exercise oximetry, etc).

The
End of Life Care Research Program
Purpose: The End of Life Care Research
Program is composed of clinical and health services
investigators and staff focused on specific projects that
have as their overall goal the improvement of end-of-life
care. In addition to providing the core support for these
specific projects, the Program serves as a resource to
other investigators conducting related research. It is
also a goal of the Program to participate in education by
providing the resources for medical students, medical
residents, physician-fellows, and nurses to participate
in these projects and conduct related research projects.
Several of the assessment tools being developed through
the research of the Program, once validated, will be used
in quality improvement projects targeting end-of-life
care.
