Research Focus

Dr Moira L. Aitken’s research program involves the epidemiological and translational aspects of cystic fibrosis.  Recent epidemiological studies include the effect of cystic fibrosis genotype on phenotype and mortality in cystic fibrosis, and influenza associated cystic fibrosis pulmonary exacerbations. Translational work includes the development of induced sputum in cystic fibrosis to enable discovery of markers of inflammation and infection in the cystic fibrosis airways, and candidate gene association studies to determine the severity of CF pulmonary phenotype. She is the site principal investigator of a cystic fibrosis translational center performing both investigator initiated translational studies and clinical trials of novel agents designed specifically for CF genotypes.
