Research Focus

My research focus has been in clinical outcomes, clinical epidemiology and clinical trials in cystic fibrosis.  I am currently the Chief Medical Officer of the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutics Development Network Coordinating Center in Seattle, Washington.  I have formal training clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical trial design.  I have conducted a number of observational epidemiology studies in cystic fibrosis, identifying risk factors that modify outcome in cystic fibrosis.  I have also involved in enhancing clinical safety during clinical trials by analyzing existing data bases to describe the natural history of cystic fibrosis patients receiving placebo.  More recently, I have also focused on improving our understanding of health related quality of life instruments and developing a novel symptom questionnaire and diary for cystic fibrosis.  We are currently deploying our symptom questionnaire along with home spirometry in a multi-center randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of home monitoring on clinical outcomes in cystic fibrosis.  My group also has been doing translational work related to the development of novel antimicrobial agents for the treatment of cystic fibrosis and understanding the underlying mechanisms of acute pulmonary exacerbation in conjunction with Dr. Pradeep Singh’s laboratory.
