Alex Bard

Alex Bard received a B.S. in chemistry (2016) from the University of Texas at Austin after researching the synthesis and characterization of large molecular lanthanide complexes under the supervision of Dr. Richard A. Jones. During his time at UT, Alex spent three years as a mentor for the Freshman Research Initiative program, where he helped to teach research methods to freshmen and sophomores. After graduation, Alex came to the University of Washington, where he earned an M.S. in inorganic chemistry (2017) and is now pursuing a Ph.D in the Pauzauskie group, where he studies the mechanisms of synthesis and phase conversion of rare earth fluorides using various analytical techniques including ex situ and liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). He also works in collaboration with groups at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on projects involving the use of ultra-high resolution techniques such as atom probe tomography and atomic resolution TEM. In his free time, Alex enjoys eating food.
