FAQs
Below are the answers to a variety of questions about applying to our
program. Please read them carefully. If you find that your question is
not answered here, please contact
What educational background do I need in order to apply?
QERM students come from a variety of academic backgrounds including:
Applied mathematics, mathematics, aquatic and fishery sciences, marine
affairs, forest resources, biology, biostatistics, statistics, microbiology,
physics and environmental science. Entering students have generally
completed college-level courses in probability and mathematical statistics,
linear algebra, and differential equations.
Students entering the program with little or no statistical background
are advised to consider taking the following courses in their first
year for preparation in this area: STAT
421, STAT 394-395 and possibly 341-342. Generally, it is advised
that all students take Statistical Inference STAT
512-513 in the year they take the statistical theory qualifying
examination.
Please be aware that the Graduate
School has their own set of requirements that must be met before
it will admit a student.
What is the deadline for applications?
The deadline for domestic applicants (US citizens, permanent US residents,
and immigrants with Green Cards) is January 15.
Due to the time required for processing international applications,
applicants applying for Autumn Quarters are strongly encouraged to submit
the application and transcripts to the Office of Graduate Admissions
by November 1. Applications received after this date will be processed
as soon as possible but significant delays may result.
Experience tells us that the US Postal Service can take up to one week
to deliver your application packet and that the second-day couriers
(FedEX, Airborne Express, etc.) are generally reliable. Please plan
accordingly.
How do I apply?
Applications
must be completed on-line.. For more information on the application
process, please read the instructions
and select the links that best apply to you (international student or
domestic student). Application materials are slightly different for
each group, so please read carefully.
Should I send all my application materials simultaneously?
While it is not required that you send all your application materials
at the same time, it is greatly appreciated.
All materials should be received in our office by the appropriate deadline.
What should I send to the Office of Graduate Admissions?
- Official GRE scores sent directly from ETS
- 1 set of official TOEFL scores (international applicants only)
- 1 set of transcripts (required only if you are accepted and enroll)
What should I send to the QERM program?
- Signed photocopy of Graduate School on-line application
- 3 letters of references and the accompanying recommendation forms
- 1 set of official transcripts
- Copy of curriculum vitae or resume
- Statement of objectives
- Optional personal statement
Please note that any materials sent in addition to those listed above
are considered non-essential and do not enhance your application.
If accepted to the program, will I receive any financial support?
Generally, the QERM program provides all of our entering students with
a graduate student assistantship that covers tuition and provides a
stipend for living expenses. Following the first year of study students
typically obtain additional support from a variety of on-campus sources,
usually in the form of a research assistantship or teaching assistantship
from another academic unit.
When should I take the GRE?
Since the Educational
Testing Service (ETS) takes at least a couple of weeks to send us
your scores, you should plan on taking the GRE well in advance of the
application deadline to ensure they arrive in time to be considered
along with the rest of your application materials. For example, domestic
applicants should plan to have taken the GRE by the end of December
(at the very latest) to ensure the scores arrive by the January 15 deadline.
How recent must my GRE scores be in order to be acceptable for review
by the admissions committee?
GRE scores are acceptable up to 5 years after the date the test was
taken.
